Anand Sehgal (Rajesh Khanna) is a patient with a terminal illness, who, despite knowing that his days are numbered, believes in living his life to the fullest. Contrasting Anand is Bhaskar Banarjee (Amitabh Bachchan), a sober doctor, upset with life and the dark reality of his nation. Bhaskar's tête-a-tête with Anand makes him notice the colors behind all the despair and complexity in one's life and teaches him a lesson.

Mohan Sharma (Tarun Bose) is a workaholic, whose life changes dramatically after his wife dies upon giving birth to their daughter Uma (Sharmila Tagore). He despises the daughter by day, and adores her when drunk at night. Shekhar Dayal (Amitabh Bachchan), a wealthy young man with a tragic past, moves into the terrace apartment of an apartment complex, & instantly proves to be impatient with the boisterous kids of the building. Mili (Jaya Bhaduri), the bubbly resident of the building decides to cure Shekhar of his grumpy ways, & Shekhar slowly falls in love with her, without knowing that Mili was terminally ill.

A hard working young man has to marry his 6 step sisters before he can think about getting married. The girl whom he tutors for living falls for him.She proposes him for marriage but he refuses citing above reason. this is over heard by his mother who poisons his step sisters to get him married and get rid of the problem. The basic idea of this film is based on the 1955 Tamil Film "Mudhal Thedi" starring Sivaji Ganeshan and Anjali Devi. The other inspiration for this films was It's a Wonderful Life produced and directed by Frank Capra. The story features a person getting help of an angel after his death.
