After having been rescued from suicide, a young man is the object of a bet by his doctor that the doctor can help him recover his joy in life. Ironically, the doctor's life is not a very happy one either, and his boast has a hollow sound. Snøvsen, a one-legged funny creature meets the boy Eigil and they become good friends.

Life and the world seen through the slight haze of the seedy Ostrich Café. Meet Sven, the butcher who dreams of an operatic career; window-cleaner Ib, who has eyes only for Caja; the waitress Søren, the head-waiter; and Lasse, who tickles the ivories of the worn-down piano.
