Leandro, a unemployed construction worker, and his friend Tocho try to rob a tobacco shop in the Madrid neighborhood of Vallecas, but Mrs. Justa, the tobacconist, prevents it by alerting the neighbors who notify the police. Meanwhile, inside the tobacco shop, the confrontation between the two friends and their 'hostages', the tobacconist and her niece, is relaxing and an incipient sympathy arises between them.
