Hardly one of French filmmaker Abel Gance's masterpieces, The Torture of Silence nevertheless has more dramatic and psychological value than your average romantic-triangle tale. Simply put, the film concerns a doctor, his wife, and his brother. The doctor, a specialist in pediatrics, has no time for his wife Marthe. She seeks solace in the arms of his brother. A very young and dazzlingly handsome Jean-Pierre Aumont plays an unemployed engineer who lands a job as a lifeguard at a Tyrolean resort. Boasting a most impressive physique, Aumont finds himself besieged by willing females and not complaining about it one tiny bit. Despite the plethora of female pulchritude, Aumont has eyes only for the beauteous Illa Meary, but he ends up neglecting her, with unfortunate consequences.

A hatter and his accomplice attempt to kidnap the son of Hollister, an American millionaire, by abducting him in a bag. However, they mistakenly kidnap Hollister himself instead. Hollister, bored with life, is actually delighted to be involved in the adventure.
