There really was a Spirit Lake Massacre in which 40-50 settlers were killed by a branch of the Sioux tribe. However, it was NOT the branch from which Sitting Bull originated and the leader was a guy named Inkpaduta. But "Inkpaduta at the Spirit Lake Massacre" doesn't have such a nice ring to it, so the folks changed this and many other details. Mildred Harris plays the classic poor working girl. Linnie (Harris) works behind the perfume counter in a department store and goes home to a miserable family life -- her mother (Ann Schaefer) neglects her, her father is an invalid, and her brother is an anarchist. One day, Preston Winfield (Kenneth Harlan), the son of the store's owner, sees how miserable she is and offers to show her a week's worth of good times.

The film is about a rancher whose spread includes the only way out of the valley where an outlaw is hiding a huge herd of stolen cattle. When the outlaw decides to challenge the rancher's claim to the land, the rancher stays one step ahead of him and hires a surveyor to remap and confirm the property lines.

Adrian Plummer (Ernest Torrence) is a narrow-minded preacher; Charles Chew, the richest man in the town (George Fawcett) is a confirmed atheist. So when Plummer's son, Guy (Broadway star Glenn Hughes) and Chew's daughter, Bee (May McAvoy), fall in love, neither family looks well on the union. Cod Dugan (Riley Hatch), who runs the local poolroom, has gotten fed up with Plummer's lectures, so he decides to get back at the preacher.

John Loder, who is married to Corinne Griffith, falls in love with another women and wants to separate from his wife without losing custody of his daughter. He frames his wife and files for divorce, and Griffith ends up losing her daughter. Griffith moves into a cheap apartment and gradually becomes a Broadway showgirl and drowns her depression in a life of alcohol and jazz.

Takla, a white orphan brought up and kept captive in a Himalayan monastery, is rescued by Althestan, an adventurous Englishman who falls in love with her. His sister, displeased with her brother's choice, arranges to have Takla kidnaped. Althestan searches for her and eventually finds her with a troupe of itinerant Muslim entertainers. (AFI)

The senior knocks off his hat. Willie replaces it and laughs feebly at the joke. The senior sternly tells him to take it off and be respectful to his betters. Kitty, Hartwell's daughter, loves old Senor and claims him for her personal property. Steve loves Kitty and refuses to shoot the horse. In anger, Hartwell discharges him. Twenty or twenty-five years ago, when the unoccupied government lands were released for settlement, everyone who registered their names was given a fair and free chance to secure one of the sections of land, which was apportioned off in sections. The settlers were drawn up in a long line at a certain distance from the lands opened up, some of them on horseback and others in vehicles of all descriptions. Iris Lee (Minter) has tired of her humdrum country existence and one night steals away from the home of Martha Kane (Schaefer), with whom she had been living, and goes to the city intent on becoming a singer. Slowly rising from a church soloist to a prima donna, her dreams are finally realized. While in the city she meets Jack Andrews (Forrest) and falls in love with him, but when he comes to her one night intoxicated, she sends him away.

With a fondness for gambling, Jim Saunders is given to neglecting his wife and child. One night during his absence at the saloon, Miguel Gomez, a Mexican outlaw, for whom $1,000 reward is offered, enters Jim's home and demands food of Mrs. Saunders. Her little child, suffering with a severe attack of croup demands her constant attention and she tells Gomez to help himself. The child is taken with a fit of choking, and her mother, alarmed, asks the outlaw to go for a doctor.

George Periolat plays a dual role in this film, initially as Joseph Sayles a sickly old man who has taken his daughter, Rhoda (played by Mary Miles Minter), overseas after a quarrel with his family. She yearns to return home, but he has disowned his past. After his death, Rhoda ventures to America on her own.
