Set during the occupation of Poland during World War II. Some Polish soldiers, slaughter a woman, her son and daughter-in-law. The husband and his father escape by being in the forest. The young man decides to join the resistance but at the first meeting Gestapo kills his go-between and chase him. In this depressing but insightful drama, Pradera (Edward Zantara) is a young poet who decides to turn his back on society. Moving to a small village, he takes a job as a lumberjack and rents a modest room from an elderly landlady. Pradera soon realizes his new life is far less satisfying than the idyllic country life he had imagined. A man who is socially inept and out of touch with the world lives with his sister in a small farmhouse. The overly sensitive man lives off his hard-working sibling, taking odd jobs as he gets them to secure his meager earnings. Although neither his wife nor his friends can understand him, a Varsovian architect leaves the hustle bustle of Warsaw to find peace and make new friends while living in a small village.

As a result of a mistake, the siblings change roles and go on vacation somewhere else than planned. The boy goes to his aunt and cousins, the girl goes to her uncle and cousins. To save her brother, the sister pretends to be a boy and he, left with no choice, pretends to be a girl.
