Although Susan Branch is herself without finances, she has many wealthy friends who supply her with clothes and gay times. She is in love with struggling author Nick Lansing, who also attracts the interests of Susan's chief patron, Ursula Gillow, and is persuaded by Ellie Vanderlyn to marry him for at least a year's happiness.

Cam Ellerby (Ray Middleton) brings his traveling medicine show to town and it spells glamor and excitement to young Sylvia Townsend (Eileen Christy). Her mother, Kathleen (Lucille Norman), recalls the days when she was part of a similar troupe before her husband began wandering. Kathleen has plans to remarry, but discovers that Ellerby is her long-lost husband.

Dwan's excellent use of New York locations enlivens a rags-to-riches tale that fully exploits O'Brien's championship boxing prowess.
