Aniela, and her life in what once was a grand and beautiful house, now running down, but still home for her. On one side of her house are scheming neighbors, apparently in cahoots with Aniela's unappreciative and greedy son, as developers attempting to buy the property to build apartments. On the other side is a nice family who host a rather noisy local children's music club. Aniela is stuck in the middle - but has her faithful companion dog to mirror her emotions.

An eleven-year-old boy escapes from an orphanage and returns to his hometown where the other kids call him "Mongrel" and his young alcoholic mother him out again. Undaunted, he sets up quarters of his own in an abandoned barge. "Mongrel's" survival stratagems and day-to-day encounters show he's not only resourceful but a fundamentally good person. They help exploited, illegal workers, immigrants from the East, and the Gypsy minority. They often deal with the problem of orphanage of children of Polish emigrants or children from broken families.
