Australian Stephen Manners travels to New Zealand and falls in love with a Mâori girl. He goes home and she dies giving birth to their daughter, Iwa. Iwa is raised by her grandfather Hauraki, who explains to Manners what happens when he returns to New Zealand twenty years later. Manners decides to take Iwa back to Sydney, Australia, but doesn't tell her that he is her father.

John Harland is a former boxer turned reverend posted to the town of Kangaroo. He falls in love with Muriel, an orphaned heiress, and discovers that her guardian Martin Giles is embezzling her inheritance. Harland earns the ire of parishioners by teaching young boys to box, and Giles manipulates local opinion to have the bishop remove him. Harland rescues a gentleman from a mugging in Sydney who suggests that he go to Kalmaroo where a criminal gang has driven the church out of the area.

Jane Howe Proctor, daughter of Alexander Proctor, a businessman, is in love with Richard Benton, a lieutenant in the army. Her father objects to the match. Jane is affiliated with the Daughters of the American Revolution, and is imbued with a high spirit of patriotism. The father also is a patriot, but has decided upon a social career for Jane.
