Dr. Isaac Peter (Mammootty) leads an unhappy life with a suspicious & nagging wife Clara (Srividya) & a helpless daughter Sicily. A new family moves in as their neighbors which has a similarly suspicious husband Vasu Pillai (Thilakan), a meek & suffering wife Ammu (Sulakshana) & their son Sanju (Rahman). Clara starts suspecting Isaac of having an affair with Ammu, & Vasu Pillai suspects the same. In the midst of all this, their children fall in love with each other, complicating matters further.

Venugopal Varma (Nedumudi Venu), a conman, cons businessman Madhavan Nair (K.P. Ummer) by claiming to grant him an Engineering college license, & later becomes close to Madhavan Nair & his daughter Suhasini (Lizy) by lying to be from a royal family. He moves to the city, leaving behind his girlfriend Leela (Menaka), who later learns that she is pregnant. When Madhavan Nair finds out the truth about Venugopal, he kicks him out, & in revenge, Venugopal runs for office & becomes Education Minister.

Based on the suicide of the famous Malayalam actress Shobha, 'Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback' chronicles the life of Lekha (Nalini), an aspirant who comes to Madras for joining the movies, & how she is taken advantage by everyone, including her greedy mother Vishalakshi (Shubha). Lekha finally falls in love with a director, Suresh Babu (Bharath Gopi), & hopes for a life with him, but after cheated by him too, commits suicide by hanging herself.

Sankarankutty (Premkumar), although coming from a long line of mahouts, considered it below his dignity to be one & leaves home when asked to go as a mahout to the Mullackal family. He meets debt-ridden Ananthapadmanaban aka Ananthu (Jagadish), whom he saves from suicide. Learning about the job, Ananthu shows up at Mullackal & takes the job, claiming to be Sankarankutty. When Sankarankutty finally shows up after a change of mind, he sees Ananthu as the mahout & vows to smoke him out of there.

19-year old Kannan (Sangeeth), who lives with his family in Trivandrum, comes with his mother (Srividya) to their ancestral home of Koyikkal, during a vacation, where all of their family planned to have a get-together. There, he reunites with his cousin & childhood playmate, 16-year old Radhika (Sonia), who had come to dance at the family temple & who was all set to go to USA to join her family. Kannan falls in love with Radhika & tries to woo her, with not so good side-effects.

Injakkadan Mathai (Innocent) & sons Thankachan (Suresh Gopi) & Roy (Jagadish) run a gainful cloth shop while a rival store run by the Chungathara family is at a loss, much to the latter's ire. After Thankachan weds Beena (Saranya), daughter of an old pal of Mathai, Thommichan, Chungathara misleads David (Rajan P. Dev), Beena's uncle, into thinking that Mathai had killed Thommichan. Hearing this, Beena's sister Shirley (Urvashi) moves in with Mathai's family, to take revenge for her dad's murder.

Krishnankutty (Mohanlal), a quarry contractor with a rough exterior & a good heart, spends his life boozing & fighting. When he gets foxed into marrying a pregnant woman Rajamma (Menaka), although angry, he doesn't kick her out of his life, but cares for her & her daughter Nalini, after she is born. At this point, Gopi (Shankar), Rajamma's old lover comes to the village as an Engineer for building a bridge. Having never told Krishnankutty who Nalini's father was, Rajamma is now in a predicament.

Medical students Sujatha (Ambika) & Mini (Shubha) get into an ongoing spat with college bad hat Ganesh (Sukumaran), which started with Ganesh & friends booing at Sujatha's debut stage-performance. Retaliations & counter-retaliations later, Ganesh is dismissed from college & Sujatha discontinues studies, afraid of Ganesh. Years later, a still vengeful Ganesh, now a successful businessman, tries to wreck Sujatha's husband Ravi Shankar's (Venu Nagavalli) business, & hence Sujatha's happy home.

Usha (Zarina Wahab), who loses her lover Ravi (Shankar) in an accident in Coonoor, comes to her elder sister Geetha's (K.P.A.C. Lalitha) house to take her mind off things. There, she gets a second chance at life & love, in the form of Ramankutty (Nedumudi Venu), a railway worker who was a friend & coworker of her brother-in-law Vasu (Gopi) & frequent visitor at their house. However, when Vasu learns about them, he opposes it as he had his own roving eye on Usha.

Balagopalan (Mohanlal), a struggling office worker, takes a fancy to school teacher Anitha (Shobana) & to impress her parents, pawns his prized 8 cent of land to raise Rs. 10,000 for Anitha's litigation crazy dad (Balan K. Nair). After he wins his case & becomes rich though, Anitha's dad gives Balagopalan a cold shoulder & tries to marry Anitha off to advocate Ramakrishnan (Sreenivasan). After losing his land & his job, a dejected Balagopalan decides to leave town to his native village.

22 year old Omanakuttan (Dileep), who was still a schoolboy & who didn't take life seriously, had to marry his friend Sudhi's (Krishna Prasad) sister Malathi (Sulekha), when her arranged wedding breaks off. When Malathi gets pregnant, Nambeeshan (Thilakan), Omanakuttan's father, who was providing for Omanakuttan & his wife gets upset over it, causing Omanakuttan to quarrel & leave home. With no education & no hope for a good job, Omanakuttan now has to struggle to survive & provide for his wife.

Narayanankutty (Jayaram), an invalid, gets a prosthetic leg & a livelihood in the form of a small store, donated by a charity. He also falls in love with Sridevi (Charmila), a school teacher, & just when life was looking good for him, he gets accused of the murder of Sridevi's coworker Hema (Shyama) who was found dead in the village lake & his life is devastated as a result.

Two close friends, Aniruddhan (Mammootty) & Sukumaran (Mohanlal), marry each others' younger sisters, Neelima (Kavita Thakur) & Sujatha (Shobana), respectively. However, after the initial euphoria wears off, Aniruddhan's conservative views started clashing with Neelima's modern outlook, driving them apart. When diplomacy failed in bringing them together, in retaliation, Sukumaran sends Sujatha & their newborn child away to Sujatha's house.

Raghavan (Jagathi Sreekumar), an auto rickshaw driver, takes pity on elderly couple Narayanan Nair (Oduvil Unnikrishnan) & Bhageerathi (T.R. Omana), who were neglected by their grown-up children, takes them under his wing & cares for them. However, when Nair gets a real estate windfall, his children show up feigning love & take Nair & his wife away. Raghavan, meanwhile gets branded a kidnapper by Nair's children & gets beset with misfortunes.

Frustrated by the intransigence of the honest Home Minister of Kerala, Venugopal (Jagathi Sreekumar), a criminal gang replaces Venugopal with a lookalike - a loudmouth dancer with a weakness for wine & women, Manikantan (Jagathi Sreekumar), to help them steal space technology from the government. While Manikantan stumbles through a series of follies in his newfound job, the real minister who escapes the gang's murder attempt, suffers away in a mental asylum.

Karuthamma (Sheela), the daughter of an ambitious Hindu fisherman, Chembankunju (Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair), was in love with a young Muslim fish trader, Pareekutty (Madhu). Chembankunju exploits Pareekutty's generosity to buy a new boat & net, but cheats Pareekutty by not returning the loan & marrying Karuthamma off to Palani (Sathyan), an orphan fisherman. However Karuthamma's past life continues to haunt her & Palani suspects her of still continuing an affair with Pareekutty.

Sankarankutty, a village simpleton, lives a carefree life, indulges in childish pursuits, lives off the money given to him by his sister (working elsewhere as a servant), and eats quite voraciously. Then one day he gets married, but the wife is frustrated by his aimless lifestyle & irresponsible attitude (even after she gets pregnant). So she goes back to her parents. Married couple & coworkers Mohan (Jayaram) & Yamuna (Urvashi) separate while Yamuna was pregnant, because Yamuna wouldn't forgive a one-night stand Mohan had with her friend. Years later, they run into each other at a new workplace, & Mohan, realizing he still had feelings for her, tries to get her back, but Yamuna spurns his advances.
