How old is your film brain?

Post by Quicky »

A bit of a cryptic question, but in my own case I found a simple answer. I've started recoding my QMDb (Quicky's Movie Database) and along the way I wrote a piece of code that checks your ratings versus IMDb's ratings in the various age and sex categories and calculates the TCI just like Criticker calculates your Taste Compatibility Index with single users here on Criticker.

Here were my results:

Code: Select all

IMDb category:         TCI
---------------------------
Males Aged 18-29      1.869
Males                 1.872
Aged 18-29            1.881
All people            1.890
Males Aged 30-44      1.944
Aged 30-44            1.944
Females Aged 18-29    2.019
Females               2.128
Females Aged 30-44    2.134
Males under 18        2.156
Males Aged 45+        2.159
Aged 45+              2.238
Aged under 18         2.297
Females Aged 45+      2.697
Females under 18      2.909

As you can see my film taste is most closely tied to the film taste of the average 18-29 year old male. That's not very surprising since I'm a 23 year old guy. You can also notice that I should try not to go to movies with women under 18 or over 45 since our tastes are significantly less compatible. So for me personally the results weren't very surprising. My film brain is male and pretty much as old as I actually am :P. But maybe for you it will be different?

For comparison purposes I also added the TCI values for Criticker which outperforms IMDb quite a lot, and my own QMDb database which on its turn outperforms Criticker.

Code: Select all

For comparison:        TCI
---------------------------
Criticker PSI's       1.580
QMDb predictions      1.320

If you want these values calculated for you, just ask. I only need your criticker id-number (the one in the url when you go to 'All Your Rankings'). (Note: these values are based only on films that are in my database, which currently consists of about 5,000 movies out of the 30,000 that are on Criticker, albeit the more popular ones of course).

Cheers, Quicky. I tend to think of myself -- and have been mistaken for -- a middle aged woman. So this was a pleasant surprise.
