Supporting member (PayPal)

Post by td888 »

I like to become a supporting member, but I don't wish to use PayPal. Is there any other way?

I requested this a while ago.

Had another option been available, I probably would have been a supporting member for the past year+ since I made this request, which alone would have made Criticker $60+ richer. I really hope it'll be added soon.

I don't want to use PayPal for the same reason. Bunch of crooks.

True story; the founder of PayPal and then-CEO of PayPal, Peter Thiel, once came over to my house to play a club tournament game of chess when I was a teenager.

He beat me. :( Really nice guy, by the way.

Somebody beat you at a game and you're telling us? Wow.... So, it's true, ShogunRua can be defeated.

Thiel was/is a solid master (~2300) and at the time I was only a strong A-player (~1900). I remember he played a very rare sideline in response to my Alapin Sicilian, probably just to get out of the book/opening preparation, after which I had a good position. However, from there, he completely outplayed me in the semi-closed game before breaking through on the kingside around move 30.

You didn't ask the more interesting question, though; why the hell was he playing a tournament game at my house, of all places?!

Ordinarily, we would have played the game at the chess club. However, Thiel, because of his insane schedule, would enter a club tournament and then flake out. One could tell that he genuinely loved chess, but was simply trying to do too many things at once in his life. Anyways, to play at least a few games, he asked if we could play at my house at a different time. It worked out very conveniently for me (a parent would usually have to drive me 45 minutes to get to the chess club normally), so I agreed.

Point is, super-rich people are almost always super-busy, even after amassing that wealth!
