"Joyful Noise"

Post by Stewball »

OK, if Joyful Noise is anything above a 2, I'll eat my own shorts. I had (and still have) an opportunity for a free screening, but free isn't nearly enough. Dolly, honey, you got the money get some plastic surgery....oh, wait. 8-) We could well have the worst movie of the year right off the bat.

Never heard of it before, but trailer surely looks like T1 material.

After watching the trailer I decided while it looks like utter shit, it is perfectly crafted to appeal to a certain demographics. This is gonna sound racist (and it totally is) but it is definitely true there are Black movies. This is one of those films. Yet, the producers decided that they wanted a few other demographics of people so they hired Dolly Parton to appeal to middle aged/older women (also explains why it is a Black movie about gospel music instead of another Madea movie). Then they got to attractive 20-somethings to have a Nicholas Sparks style love story to appeal to the sappy love story crazy women ranging from high school to their mid-late 20's. Whether any of these demographics will go to or even enjoy this film may be subject to debate because it looks like a mess, but that is probably the reason this shit got made.

Yeah, and the music competition was a long gone cliche even before Glee applied the CPR paddles to it. It's way overused but still if you ignore the story, the music itself can be good, but even that doesn't appear to be the case with JN.

And there are two kinds of minority movies, those targeted strictly at minorities, and those with a minority cast but aiming at a wider audience. It's probably my prejudice, but I always assume the ones with any quality to be the latter, and the ones that are crap and/or that promote minority racism, to be the former. Machete is an example of both that comes screaming to mind--it's politically correct reviews notwithstanding. (But I love Once Upon a Time in Mexico.)

No, not really. Not when 3 of the 5 highest billed actors/actresses are white.

And in general, there have been plenty of good black films in the past (blaxploitation in the 70s, some funny comedies in the 80s and 90s, etc.), just not nowadays.

I could be wrong, I'm just judging by what I saw(Dolly Parton and her son singing with a black choir) in the preview and not who is getting paid how much. I also never said black films are bad. I just think this looks like a mess. If you see it and it turns out I am absolutely wrong about my demographical analysis, please report back so I can apologize to the African American community for the white people who made that shitty preview.

Actually, I would say based on the trailer, this film is made for midwestern/suburban WHITE audiences. Dolly Parton has an entire demo (you know what it is) in her back pocket. Think The Blind Side. I actually met people who wanted to see this... when I visited Kansas recently. Strike me dead if it weren't true - I know I wanted to be.
