Darren Aronofsky's Next Project

Post by MmzHrrdb »

I don't know how many of you have heard (I didn't find out until today), but Darren Aronofsky is no longer directing The Wolverine (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/20 ... ut_of.html). So this makes me wonder what his next project will be? According to this IMDB article (http://www.imdb.com/news/ni7582998/) Aronofsky is working on a comic of his long-pondered Noah's Ark Project. He also is looking to make a film adaptation. I'm familiar with the story because of my catholic upbringing, but not as intimately familiar with it as Aronofsky seems.

Personally, I love the idea (but I also pretty much love anything with Aronofsky's name attached to it). It sounds like there would be a lot of room from character development (I mean the world was just flooded, there can't be much more to focus on); however, I would be worried about the cast (afterall, according to the Bible the only people aboard were Noah, his wife, his 3 sons, and their wives). I think it would take some talented actors to fill these roles as the characters themselves pretty much have to be the focus (here's me praying for Edward Norton or Philip Seymour Hoffman). Aronofsky has elicited some great performances though (Burstyn in Requiem, Rourke and Tomei in The Wrestler, Portman in Black Swan). Now combine acting of that caliber, with the stunning beauty of The Fountain, and Darren Aronofsky you've got me sold.

I wasn't even aware that he was lined up to do "The Wolverine," but it seems out of his spectrum anyway.

Most of his movies are in my T9, with The Wrestler being my favorite, which makes me wonder if he can pull off a heavily induced CGI comic book movie (as most are, especially the last wolverine movie).
Seems to me, his true talent is with acting and story, as recently portrayed in the Black Swan, and i'm not sure of a comic book such as The Wolverine would have been a good fit.

Now with the Noah's Ark Project - it sounds like a terrible idea as it's been done to death, especially in many many "TV Movies."
I think that Ben-Hur is likely the beacon for all "biblical movies," with the 10 commandments being a close second; and I would prefer to have this story-genre put to bed.

As for OP's concern on cast/story, it depends which route he goes... Which part of the story does he focus on; the boat building or the boat ride? Do the animals talk? Will he Talk to God?

Anyway, I too generally like anything with Aronofky's name on it, and I'm sure he'll do a good job... god know's it can't be any worst then "Evan Almighty."

I agree that doing The Wolverine doesn't fit him. I haven't seen many biblical movies (in fact I think one of the only one's I have seen is The Passion of the Christ), so I wouldn't even know where to compare it.

From what I read about Noah's Ark it sounded like Aronofsky wanted to focus more on character. I think the great flood will definitely play a big role, but I think the bulk of the focus would be on life after the flood. He even mentions something about Noah growing and drinking wine after the flood because of "survivors guilt". Maybe I should dig around for my Bible and read up on that section.
Edit: I'm not even sure Darren will even do this movie. I'm just trying to speculate about his next project. As far as I know, he hasn't confirmed this, but he has had this project in mind for years, and the production of a comic about the story makes me think it's a possibility.

LOL Surivior's guilt? What a dumb angle to take on the Noah story. "Oh no, I'm the most righteous person alive and God singled me out and spoke to me directly to help Him save all the animals of His creation and allowed me to save my whole family as part of the bargain. Poor me!"

The Noah of the Bible would be exulting in his own piety, not showering himself in guilt for having been spared God's wrath.

A much more interesting take on this story would focus on the day to day mechanics of housing, feeding and cleaning up the insane amounts of shit from all those animals. The Bible gives us the exact dimensions of the Ark, we know what sorts of animals were living in the region at the time...someone start crunching the numbers. How many cubic yards of shit is that per day? I bet it's a lot.

Hell, after 40 days and nights, I bet Noah didn't even find land....it was just that a high enough volume of shit had been shovelled overboard that it eventually poked above the water's surface.

Now THERE'S a movie. :)

I think the Noah's Ark sounds interesting enough, I just think you may have a bit of a misunderstanding about what was Biblically considered holy and the messed up modern day interpretation of it. Noah of the Bible would not be "exulting in his own piety". Biblically speaking emotions like humility and loving your enemy were pretty high up on good character traits list, meaning the survivor's guilt angle would be relatively appropriate. This guy wasn't like the Pope wearing fancy robes and preaching to millions of followers who would probably do just about anything for him. Mainly I would just side with Aronofsky on this one because I would venture to know what he's talking about.

Also if it had Edward Norton and Philip Seymor Hoffman (2 of my favorite all time actors) that would be amazing.

Well I disagree with your interpretation of the Bible, but I learned long ago that agruing anything related to religion or politics online is a pointless exercise, so I'm just going to walk away while we still like each other :)

Mostly though, I was just making a shit joke.

I can see that angle. I just would imagine if it was me god had picked, and I had just my immediate family with me. Surely there must have been others who lived their lives well. Why did god pick me? I don't know that's just how I feel. I'm nowhere close to an expert though. The only things I know about the story are the things I learned in catechism years ago.

I totally agree. If you are gonna do anything just throw your point out and let it be. Arguing online is probably the most unsuccessful way to convince anybody of anything.

Also, I did approve of the shit joke. :D

TheDenizen is right. It sounds like a really dumb fucking idea for a movie. But after the overhyped mediocrity that was both "Requiem for a Dream" and "Black Swan", I'm not going to waste my money on an Arronofsky picture, either.
