Director Quentin Tarantino has announced his top 20 movies released since 1992 (see Criticker blog). They are as follows:
Top movie:
Battle Royale
Rest of the list:
Anything Else
Audition
The Blade
Boogie Nights
Dazed & Confused
Dogville
Fight Club
Friday
The Host
The Insider
Joint Security Area
Lost in Translation
The Matrix
Memories of Murder
Supercop
Shaun of the Dead
Speed
Team America: World Police
Unbreakable
For comparison, here is my own list of the top 20 movies released since 1992, listed in order of my score:
100. Breaking the Waves
100. The Thin Red Line
96. Irreversible
95. Husbands and Wives
94. The Century of the Self
94. The Wind Will Carry Us
93. Dogville
93. I Stand Alone
93. The Idiots
93. Lost Highway
93. Ten
93. There Will Be Blood
93. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
92. Manderlay
92. Mulholland Drive
92. The Power of Nightmares
92. A Taste of Cherry
91. Dancer in the Dark
90. Bad Lieutenant
90. Kingdom (von Trier)
There were 9 other movies I gave a score of 90 to, but I have not very confidently picked out the above two for representation on this list.
There is thus only one movie that Tarantino and I agree belongs on a list of the top 20 movies released since 1992: Dogville. That this is the movie we have in common is perhaps not as surprising as it might at first appear, given that I have six von Trier movies on my list!

Re: Top 20 movies since 1992 (Tarantino's versus mine)
Quentin Tarantino is an idiot, and an overrated director. "Supercop" is one of the top 20 films since 92'? Yeah, you can really tell he watches a lot of kung fu films. (Sarcasm) "Speed"? "Team America", which, while a funny film, isn't even among the two best comedies Parker and Stone have made?
"Battle Royale", while an awesome, masterpiece movie, is vastly inferior to not only the novel it's based upon, but the later manga. Oddly enough, going by rankings, it's my 21st favorite film since 1992, with an 86. "Audition" would be my 23rd favorite film since 1992.
We only agree about "The Matrix".
Anyways,
Beat (1997) 100
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001) 98
No Country for Old Men (2007) 97
Chin long chuen suet (1997) 96
Johnny English (2003) 96
Vampire Hunter D (2000) 93
Croupier (1998) 92
Fulltime Killer (2001) 90
The Matrix (1999) 90
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 90
Crank: High Voltage (2009) 89
Shaolin Soccer (2001) 89
Office Space (1999) 88
Slumdog Millionaire (2008) 88
The Visitors (1993) 88
Am zin (1999) 87
Ichi the Killer (2001) 87
Oldboy (2003) 87
Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior (2003) 87
Ronin (1998) 87

Re: Top 20 movies since 1992 (Tarantino's versus mine)
I am sure at least one of Tarantino's flicks would appear in my top20. His top films didn't really surprise me. I never saw him as someone chilling with some Bergman flick over the glass of red wine in cold winter evenings. He always looked more of the midnight show on cable guy.

Re: Top 20 movies since 1992 (Tarantino's versus mine)
For the purpose of this exercise, I decided to disregard documentaries and Tarantino's films (two of which, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, would have definitely made it onto this list).
3-Iron
Children of Men
Crimson Gold
Dogville
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Fargo
George Washington
The Hole
In the Mood for Love
Kings and Queen
Mulholland Drive
The New World
No Country for Old Men
Oldboy
Pan's Labyrinth
The Royal Tenenbaums
Save the Green Planet
Synecdoche, New York
Talk to Her
There Will Be Blood
I think, with the exception of The Hole, these are all post-2000.

Yeah, this is the one I really don't get. There's others I disagree with, but Anything Else isn't a film I disliked so much as it's just a mediocre effort from Woody.FitFortDanga wrote:Anything Else? Seriously?

Re: Top 20 movies since 1992 (Tarantino's versus mine)
I was reading through Tarantino's list backwards, and it occurred to me that the protagonists of a significant few of the films seem to come from a dejected/loser/rookie position - to a sudden position of power and responsibility, thus realizing the potential they may not have been able to without chance or serendipity. Maybe a bigger fan can enlighten me further, but this allusion seems to mirror his own life; going from video store clerk to cult-film hero.
I was looking for correlation with Tarantino's own output, and I think it exists somewhat in the negative. His characters often have a home-grown, fearless independence. It's not geeks/losers get cool -- people are cool.

Anything Else is one of Woody's many underrated gems. Glad to see someone finally praising it.
