I hate it when people take reviews out of context and completely ignore the reasoning behind it. I hate it when people call other people's opinions "retarded". I hate it when people tell other people to "shut the fuck up" for not enjoying a movie they enjoyed.

This post isn't being abusive, it's simply pointing out someone else's abuse.

Why do you take everything so personal? I wasn't talking about you. Narcissistic much?

For all I know, there are people on here that have similar tastes to mine but rate movies based on factors other than how much they actually enjoy them. If I'm entertained by a movie and look forward to watching it again repeatedly, I'm gonna rate that sucker to reflect the joy that it brings me. That's why Showgirls gets a higher rating from me than Citizen Kane. While I believe there are people who really do like Citizen Kane enough to give it a really high rating, I have to wonder if everybody who does so actually enjoys it that much.

I haven't seen Showgirls.. Isn't that the film that stars Kyle Maclachlan and naked ladies? I suspect I'd enjoy that, seems pretty hard to screw up.

Regardless, I think Citizen Kane is pretty fantastic. Thought so before I began film studies as well. It's definitely not the best film ever, but I would certainly watch it again.

Don't be ashamed! It's OK to like and dislike the "wrong" movies! Rate movies for yourself, not other people! Here endeth the lesson.

I've seen it 5 or 6 times now and really enjoy it.

I do get what you're saying though. Tommy Boy is in the same tier as Citizen Kane for me. Is it anywhere near of a masterpiece? No, definitely not. But fuck, to me that movie is one of the funniest I've ever seen in my entire life.

The naked ladies factor in Showgirls is considerable, and MacLachlan appears in it quite a bit, so if you value those two things in a movie then you're in for a good time. If you favor good acting or tastefulness... well, there could be a problem.

I saw Citizen Kane fairly early in my formative movie watching years, but it hasn't proved very influential to my movie watching career. The movies I rated highly were very influential and always deliver the entertainment goods. I don't doubt that you enjoy Citizen Kane, but it was just an example of a classic movie that most everyone seems to give a high rating (just like Showgirls is a classic bad movie that frequently receives a poor rating). I do doubt that as many people who rate classic movies highly really like them all to that extent.

That's what my point really is. Liking a widely approved classic does not mean that a less approved of movie cannot be enjoyed just as much (or more). Nor do all classic movies have to be given a high rating just because of their status. There are quite a few movies that I'd rather watch repeatedly than Citizen Kane, or The Godfather, or All About Eve or whatever. I'm not going to rate a movie really high if I'm not interested in rewatching it or get little entertainment value from viewing it.

Yeah but if you'd ask me if Tommy Boy or Citizen Kane is better then I'd reply Citizen Kane.

"It's not as good as the book."

No shit it's not as good as the book. Film as a medium doesn't allow for thorough exposition and such. So a great book is almost impossible to improve on. Sheesh.

Buzz words/phrases

Quirky, pretentious, revolutionary, heartfelt, contrived, unconventional, unflinching realism, unconvincing, et cetera. These words and phrases don't mean anything to me in the context of a movie review. They occur too often and are attached to too many different things. (I do admit, however, that I tend to fall back on these terms myself if I'm not careful. The lure of the cliche is a powerful one).

It really depends on what your definition of "better" is. If you're basing it on the technical skill behind the movie, or if the subject matter is more profound, or some other sort of widely accepted objective criteria that = "better", that's one thing. If you're basing it on what you like to watch, that's another. I base my definition of "better" on what I like to watch the most and get the most positive feeling from. Because the latter is different for everone, there is no way to objectively evaluate it.

Of course, the two definitions can overlap. A person can like movies with great technical skill and get a positive feeling for that reason. I'm more of a style and mood person, and so that's what I look for, among other things.
