I feel this way about a lot of things. I'm probably right there right now with Hitchcock. I get angry at the work and at other people, but I'm just frustrated with myself.

Maybe I'm right and everyone else is wrong, but until then I'll knuckle down and keep watching, reading, thinking, living in the striving for things to fall in to place.

I haven't gelled with Herzog, despite finding his films intellectually fascinating. A lot of cerebral movie buffs seem to have a similar mentality as WH, but his ideas are so base yet deep-running and universal that a prerequisite connection of mind should not be essential in appreciating his films.

Try the documentaries - especially the ones around himself and the films. If you're anything like me, context is important and has a substantial effect.

Edit:

Also, have low expectations. Subjectivity removes blame. Herzog is a delicacy. I think that's a good description. Fear of exclusion and disrespect based on taste should be paradoxical in this context. To put it practically - I'm not fond of Hitchcock (and not always with justification), yet I have enough confidence in my taste to assume preclusion of disrespect. This relieves the fear, which relieves the venting on fans of above average directors and the directors themselves. Meanwhile, Michael Bay sleeps comfortably in his bed at night, probably with a Russian supermodel and a pet Dodo. Probably.

"Pretentious" is the most over-abused word in criticism. Explain why Herzog is "pretentious" please.

I have yet to see a Herzog film that is "pretentious".

I haven't looked at your rankings or anything, but I thought Notorious rocked the shit. His directing style is a bit...over-dramatic...I guess.

Hitchcock was just an example for some sincere solidarity. I'll definitely watch Notorious if it comes on, though.

I just checked out FFAL's ratings. We seem to go for a similar emotional/character punt ala Diving Bell, Into the Wild.

Herzog comes at you from a different angle: his characters often a guise for a broader contemplation on humanity's pervading base instincts, drives, and inclinations. These characters are difficult to relate to both in their emotion and in the sense of fearless confrontation with life.

I dig the whole empath thang, so watching Herzog, for me, is like someone ceaselessly kneeing me in the thigh whilst whispering philosophy in my ear.

From the careful choice of actors/music, the kind of photography / stories he picks that seems both naturalistic and strangely-otherworldly, and the variance that he approaches each of his work with [I'd have a hard time picking a director of more diverse practices], I just don't know what there isn't to like about Herzog.

I wish there was a word filter on all forums so when someone posts the word 'pretentious' it changes to 'I just don't get it'.

The only pretentious film people I've ever seen have been bad student film-makers where eating a bowl of cereal is akin to world hunger or something and no one in a class of 30 or so get it. Even the teacher is left scratching his or her head and the student's attitude is that they're just a cinematic master that's completely above their audience.

Wait, scratch that. Troy Duffy is a pretentious douche.

LOL. This is my brother's piss-take of 'cutting edge: avante guarde' film.
Warning: may as well contain saucy-fish orgasms (suspect NSFW).

Apparently this is how archaeology students live.
