Re: Top 5 Director Averages
I just picked a few directors that I've seen a good number (at least four) of films by and whose films I figure I typically like. Here are my highest:
Kar Wai Wong 91 (4)
Stanley Kubrick: 90.75 (4)
Martin Scorsese 89.43 (7)
Quentin Tarantino 89.43 (7)
Alfred Hitchcock 86.33 (9)
... and the others.
Wes Anderson 85.2 (5)
Joel Coen 83.09 (11)
Satoshi Kon 81.5 (4)
Hayao Miyazaki 80.2 (5)
Spielberg, the director from whom I've seen the most films (14), has an average of 62.71.

Re: Top 5 Director Averages
I'm bumping the list up to a 3 movie minimum.
Wes Anderson - 81.3 (7)
Akira Kurosawa - 80.3 (3)
Peter Jackson - 80.2 (5)
Quentin Tarintino - 78.83 (6)
George Roy Hill - 78 (3)
George Roy Hill bumped Orson Welles off of the list. A prime example of how just a few movies skews this list. I love the three movies of his I've seen (Slapshot, The Sting and Butch Cassady) but I'm sure if I saw more his average would come well down.
Lord of the Rings should really be one movie, and that would obviously reduce Peter Jackson's score considerably. I think Welles and Miyazaki were next on the list if it weren't for those two inclusions.
Clearly I need to get around to watching more Kurosawa.

Re: Top 5 Director Averages
i'd love to have some top x page for people, so i could really see what my top five are, because it seems to me that i probably would forget most of the directors i've seen if put on the spot like now, so i'm just going to look up a couple and post the averages.
Darren Aronofsky: 87
Woody Allen: 79.95
Danny Boyle: 84.2
George Lucas: 67.8 (that's pretty bad for me)
Steven Speilberg: 82.84
Peter Jackson: 79.67
Robert Zemeckis: 82.2
Billy Wilder: 84.29
i believe that each of those i've seen at least four movies by.

Re: Top 5 Director Averages
1. Ingmar Bergman 87.29 (7)
This doesn't even include Fanny and Alexander, Persona, Cries and Whispers and Scenes from a Marriage, all that I suspect I will love once I get my hands on them
2. David Lynch 86.50 (8)
Does not include Dune and Wild at Heart which I suspect will result in a decrease of about 4-10 points.
3. Jim Jarmusch 82.00 (6)
Not including Mystery Train, Broken Flowers, The Limits of Control and Ghost Dog.
I have too many films that I badly want to watch. This week, I am starting on Bunuel although I have not finished my Lynch marathon.
