Re: The ten lowest-scoring directors

Jan 2025 update, at 5770 films rated.
I actually watched a lot of bad movies this last year, which helped to correct that trouble with underrepresentation of infamously bad directors on this list (Bong fell six or seven places from 1st place). So it's dramatic enough to merit an update.
I didn't include scores that are based on shorts.
I'm going to be cheeky and extend and divide my list, though.

25 lowest scores @ 4-9 films rated:

1. Dinesh D'Souza & Bruce Schooley.... 00.0 (4)
2. Michael Bay.............................. 11.3 (4)
3. Zack Snyder.............................. 13.8 (4)
4. Tate Taylor, Alex Proyas, Lucio Fulci.. 15.0 (4)
7. Martin McDonagh, Bong Joon-Ho.... 18.8 (4)
9. Joe Wright, Christopher Guest...... 20.0 (4)
11. Yorgos Lanthimos, Michel Gondry.. 21.3 (4)
13. Eli Roth................................. 22.0 (4)
14. James Wan............................ 22.5 (6)
15. Sam Mendes........................... 22.5 (4)
16. Ang Lee................................ 23.3 (4)
17. Darren Lynn Bousman............... 24.6 (5)
18. Paul Feig.............................. 25.0 (4)
19. Wong Kar-Wai......................... 25.8 (4)
20. Darren Aronofsky..................... 27.0 (4)
21. James Cameron...................... 28.0 (6)
22. Robert Rodriguez..................... 29.0 (5)
23. David O. Russell...................... 30.0 (4)
24-25. Antoine Fuqua, Renny Harlin... 31.3 (4)

5 lowest scores @ 10 film minimum (yeah, I gave them that many chances):

1. Christopher Nolan.................... 28.9 (10) ...a real contender.
2. Wes Craven............................ 29.4 (10) ...but I have a soft spot for THHE and TLHotL.
3. Clint Eastwood........................ 32.9 (11) ..."Mystic River" was okay, otherwise god I hate him.
4. Quentin Tarantino.................... 36.3 (12) ...I actually like "Death Proof" the best.
5. Ridley Scott............................ 40.9 (15) ...but the original "Alien" is a masterpiece.

So now Kevin Smith, John Carpenter, the Farrelly Brothers and Rob Zombie can count themselves lucky to have dropped off the list... but I just couldn't let Clint Eastwood off that easy, so it's good I added the 10+ list. And I'm sure to annoy more people through the new entries of McDonagh, Lanthimos, Gondry, Ang Lee and/or Mendes :/

Re: The ten lowest-scoring directors

January 2020

An aside:
Someone was gravely butthurt last time because Nolan and Aronofsky made my bottom ten directors. There is an explanation, though that person may not like it: I usually won't bother to watch more than 1-2 films by a clearly awful filmmaker (for instance, I only watched 2 by Brian Levant, his #1 bottom director). For the likes of Nolan and Aronofsky, who are very popular and whose every film is hyped to the extreme, I actually make a favorable exception -- which guarantees that they will make the cut when other terrible directors don't. Sadly, though "The Wrestler" and "Interstellar" weren't strictly godawful, I haven't seen a single decent film by those two.

4 film minimum, I'm listing 15 this time:

=1. Bong Joon-ho............. 18.75 (4)
=1. Darren Lynn Bousman... 18.75 (4)
3. James Wan................. 22.50 (6)
4. Paul Feig.................... 25.00 (4) ..(I decided to count complete TV series as single films)
5. Christopher Nolan......... 26.13 (8)
6. Darren Aronofsky.......... 27.00 (4)
7. James Cameron............ 28.00 (6)
8. Robert Rodriguez.......... 29.00 (5)
9. David O. Russell........... 30.00 (4)
10. Wes Craven............... 30.20 (10)
11. Renny Harlin.............. 31.25 (4)
12. Clint Eastwood.......... 32.20 (10)
13. John Carpenter.......... 32.60 (10)
14. Farrelly Brothers........ 34.72 (4.5) ..(did an average here cuz 1 film wasn't in common)
15. Joel Schumacher......... 35.67 (6)

If I were to do a 3 film minimum, the leading 7 would be: Michael Bay, Zack Snyder, Lucio Fulci, Christopher Guest, Alex Proyas, Michel Gondry and Ang Lee.

May 2016

I'm raising the bar a bit and including only ones by whom I've seen at least 4 full-length feature films, so Tony Scott makes a narrow escape. Nolan has gone down two places to make room for the new champions, Bousman and Wan of "Saw" fame.

1. Darren Lynn Bousman... 18.75 (4)
