The last half is a little bit unguided, and it really doesn't have enough dialog, but it was well directed and the music was utilized extremely well. That ending scene was a pretty good one too.

plus: anthony quinn and irene papas's performances. minuses: just about everything else, especially alan bates performance/character and the plot which is quite horrific..

A timid Englishman (Alan Bates) finds his life changed--for better and worse--by his friendship with the earthy Zorba (Anthony Quinn). Each loves and loses, but at the end, they find joy in the simple pleasures of life--friendship, laughter, and dance. Some excellent moments, a great score, and a fine performance by Quinn must compete with an excessive runtime, a decidedly unclear tone (just how are we supposed to feel about the villagers?), and the wearisome passivity of Bates' character.

Technically of interest, but the transition from novel to film is not successful. Too much of the leisurely pace of a book is preserved in an episodic affair.

Looks somewhat dated, but aside from anything else, it offers the chance to see Quinn's signature role as Zorba, by turns exuberant and heartbreaking.

Decent enough. Zorba is a nice character, enjoyable to watch but the movie was rather poorly done. The script doesn't make much sense and the pacing is meh. Stuff happens and neither the characters nor the movie itself show any reaction at all. It was weird and uncomfortable at times. Still worth a watch if you have nothing better to do.

There's some great stuff here but the bizarre tonal shifts from comedic to dramatic keep it from truly excelling. Probably something that was lost in the editing room. The music is good but also occasionally used at weird times. Quinn is fantastic and entertaining though and it's worth seeing the movie for his performance. Thankfully, the ending is pretty amazing too and that's always a bonus.

Zorba the Irritating Piece of Shit—Kadının boğazını kestiler kurbanlık koyun gibi bunlar sahilde kuzu çevirme sirtaki (P.S. Alan Bates’in bir kirli sakalla Mahsun’a dönüşmesi)

Two and a half hours of Quinn as a larger-than-life Greek is a little much and Bates is oddly unimpressive as the bumbling Brit, but there is plenty to enjoy here, from the striking b&w lensing to the charismatic Papas in a bleak subplot. Best of all is Kedrova - funny, pathetic and heart wrenching, she has to be among the most memorable of all Supporting Actress winners.

The film has no focus which makes it terrifying. There are two scenes particularly shocking yet film is so cold blooded that it will forget what happened a few minutes ago. It's quite similar to real world. Show goes on.

Kazantzakis novel is a masterpiece, maybe the best literature character ever written. The film captures the essence of it. Solid performances.

Part The Visitor, part Fitzcarraldo, part Manic Pixie Greek Dude. The parts I liked -- the looting scene, the collapse of the plan -- I liked more in concept than in execution, & the rest sadly adheres to the expected track of ethnic character teaching the stuffy Anglo Saxon intellectual how to Really Live. That said, the movie sees the title character with pretty clear eyes -- he's not simply a white-person-enlightenment generator but someone with complex motivations & an occasionally rough touch

A film about a joyous free spirit like Zorba (beautifully enacted by Quinn) needed a more disciplined hand behind the camera; becomes much too much of a good thing, and increasingly bogged down in over-extended sequences. Half an hour of trimming and general tightening up would have helped; however Bates is terrific, in a difficult role as the stuffy anchor, and Kedrova has some nice moments in support. Unusual decision to film in B&W pays off, with the scenery coming up especially well.

Alexis Zorba may be eccentric, but his zest for life is infectious. Not only is he acquitted of all charges, but Fox is commended for beautifully restoring this life-affirming masterpiece.

My favorite movie about Greece ever. At least ones that don't feature mythology or American-Greeks.

The film version of Kazantzakis' masterpiece restricts the novel's philosophical overtones, but that's to be expected. By stripping the book's plot down to its bare essence, while retaining some crucial philosophical themes, it develops an engrossing and straightforward storyline without sacrificing the spirit of those great characters. Bates is slightly stale as the conventionally portrayed protagonist but Kedrova and especially Quinn deliver truly transcendent performances.
