Watching Zatoichi get captured and tortured did not seem in keeping with the legend. There were a few other gaffs as well. The story and fights were not handled as well and many other Zatoichi movies. Also it had a very shabby ending. Not the best of the series.

Zatoichi doesn't feel like a badass this time -- just a compulsory killer hacking his way out of the plot. Zatoichi at Large starts out ambitious but its lethargy and awkward stricture to formula are gonna put it solidly in the lower ranks of the series.

BlurayRip VXT.

Another of the darker-feeling ones; although the story was pretty typical this episode just had a gloomy mood throughout. Mori throws a lot of twists into the final action scene, including Ichi in a festival costume and Ichi on fire (!) but they somehow fail to gel into a cohesive, impactful whole.

My favorite Zato movie since #13. All the elements are familiar, but at their very best with emotion, action and humor all interacting effectively. Just as soon as you get past that weird-ass baby birthing scene at the beginning, that is. Never before has a woman dying during childbirth been played as a comedy, so at least give it points for originality.
