Jumanji in space, but much more than that. Elf showed promise, but Favreau really delivers the goods here, making a space movie with as few digital effects as possible. Lots of models, lots of costumes -- the practical effects and art direction lend the movie a heart, a soul. It feels like a throwback, when it could have very easily been a mindless kids adventure. Well-acted, well-made and whole lotta fun. Favreau's Iron Man should really be something. [e: It was.]

For anyone that doesn't know, the basis for Zathura is pretty much Jumanji with space instead of the jungle (the original book was even written by the same author). It's a fun movie and there really isn't anything bad about it. Also, I never thought I'd say this, but Dax Sheppard was easily the best part of the movie. He was funny and helped liven things up a bit.

Spoiled, retarded kids who can't stop screaming, but there's a lesson in there somewhere. If only they'd have learned it before the film ended. Better than Jumanji, but fucking kids, seriously. Also look out for a really disturbing moment near the end.

I started with very low expectations, which quickly - to my surprise - turned on its head. This is insanely entertaining with awesome typecast actors, great screenplay that plays its conflict pieces excellently, keeping the viewer enticed the whole time, and when it starts to get ever so slightly boring, introduces new and intriguing plot elements. Great bit of fun and definitely the best (by far) film in the wider Jumanji series, old and new alike.

The parallels to Jumanji are obvious, except the kids here are annoying with their bickering, and there is a distinct lack of Robin Williams. It's fine, but offers few surprises. Brainless lizard zorgons, Tim Robbins plays the most patient dad in the world, Kristen Stewart misses most of the fun and apparently suffers from cryogenic brain damage, and Brett Favre references, back when he was cool.

A sickening tale of two boys who let Dax Shepard into their home instead of leaving him to die in space. The 15 points are for Kristen Stewart

Charming and clever child fantasy is somewhat derivative of JUMANJI, but bests it handily thanks to a sharp, witty screenplay, an old-fashioned "boys own" sense of adventure, and lovable performances from Bobo and Hutcherson, backed by Shepard and Stewart who take potentially silly characters and play them with utter conviction (moony Stewart is particularly good). A surprising amount of good fun here.

Jumanji in space. It doesn't carry quite the emotional weight that Robin Williams brought the original. But it works well as a fun Sci-Fi adventure and an interesting alternate to the Jungle elements of Jumanji.

After their father (Tim Robbins) is called into work, two young boys, Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and Danny (Jonah Bobo), are left in the care of their teenage sister, Lisa (Kristen Stewart), and told they must stay inside. Walter and Danny, who anticipate a boring day, are shocked when they begin playing Zathura, a space-themed board game, which they realize has mystical powers when their house is shot into space. With the help of an astronaut (Dax Shepard), the boys attempt to return home.

As noted many times before: it appears to be a Jumanji rip-off. But this one is 10 years later and I am sure Zathura appeals to a whole new and different generation. The effects are good and so is the acting. Even Shepard didn't bother me! For kids I am willing to bet it is entertaining. However, I am from the Jumanji-generation and I liked that one a whole lot better. 34/100.

Made for kids explains a lot. Basically Jumanji in space. I liked the Kristen Stewart frozen sister bit, but disliked the robot and lizard monsters. I also liked how they totally demolished the house. It was somewhat clever how they tied the story together at the end. Kids will likely love it.

William Sleator's book Interstellar Pig did this type of story in much more chilling and better (almost Stephen King -ish) way. It was one of my favourites as kid. I could've liked this more if I saw it before reading that one.

movies that feature a heartwarming family message almost always induce a sort of indistinct pain. no, people making these movies, your caricatures of the american family unit do not impart wisdom or teach us important moral lessons. they are fucking stupid, and are embarrassing to watch.

Just about satisfactory kids movie that may have failed commercially because it did not contain the kind of elements that attract parents to themselves want to see a movie targeted mainly at children (this is not a criticism).

I'm going to give this a pass. Yeah, the two lead kids are a bit annoying, but this film is made for kids, and I have a feeling they won't find them as annoying as I did. It's well-made, charming and doesn't pull any punches. There's a seriously dark implied backstory and other disturbing stuff - of a nature which has been more or less absent from kids' films for decades. It's not brilliant or anything, but solid work as usual by Favreau.

You can see Favreau's got a good eye. And diggedy!! Kirsten Stewart lookin pretty darn hot in some shots! RRrrraaaaor! Overall an entertaining watch..For those bored nights

Sci-fi Jumanji. figured I'd say that first since everyone else does. I don't think it was as good as jumanji but it certainly wasn't bad. Good solid story and some of the lines the kids had were hysterical. When the younger brother screams "BUT YOU CAN'T CHEAT IN STRATEGO" I'm not sure why but I was cracking up at that part.

I only watched it to complete Jon Favreau's filmography, but to my surprise it was ok. Favreau has an elegant and simple visual style, gets good performances, and his use of actual models and puppetry and costumes for special effects instead of just CGI out the ass is such a breath of fresh air. It's very much a reprise of Jumaji and you never really believe the characters are in danger, but for a kid's movie, you could easily do much, much worse.
