Probably my favorite piece of animation after Frederic Back's wonderful The Man Who Planted Trees. Norstein includes an extensive range of emotions throughout the film, from the playfulness of the early moments to the terror of being lost in the fog, and finally to the resignation of never finding his way home. Yet what I most love is the sense of mystery and beauty that pervades the world of the hedgehog, particularly in the scenes with the tree and in the river. An absolutely wonderful film.

Criticker: Your probable score is .... -- No, no! I'm not going to let my memory of an innocent Soviet hedgehog that sips tea made on a samovar while counting the stars and sharing raspberry jam with a bear cub be stained by a trifling collective judgment squeezed into two worthless digits. That hedgehog will... never... be... the same.

There seems little doubt that Norstein is the greatest animator in the world.

Animation looks cool, but I know there was some kind of symbolism there that I was just too dumb to grasp.

Absolutely lovely piece of animation. The different animals were neat and I laughed out loud at the bear at the end.

Narrator: "The Bear Cub talked and talked, and the Hedgehog thought, "Isn't it good that we're together again?" And also he thought about the Horse: how was she doing there, in the fog?"

"Who other than you knows how to count the stars?!" A wonderful and cute short about the mysteries of life, sometimes magical, sometimes dreadful. And how a friend to share the most trivial of things and wonder at the universe is everything we may need.

Haunting and lyrical adaptation of a Russian folk tale. Voice acting, music and animation are all rich, gorgeously textured and darkly hypnotic while the story is mysterious and universal. A pure ethereal delight.

Great art style. Do not expect an intricate story, though.

The voices and images are quite haunting, and I have to say, I like the story as well. Not the most ground-breaking or slick animation style but it has a consistent artistic style - and some nice creative touches. Scar your kids for life with this Soviet precursor to Sonic the Hedgehog.

a rather cute animation about a little hedgehog exploring the mysterious, foggy night. great use of music, though ultimately it doesn't add up to a huge amount.

Everytime time I see a Former Soviet Union animation that includes a little forest animal, I'm hypnotised and feel like I was watching a great actor in a wonderful film. The sheer quality and atmosphere of these Soviet animations are mindblowing.

This flick has a real sense of mystery and the animation lends itself well to that. You always want to know what he's going to see next, there are a few moments of intrigue and beauty (like the tree), and I even laughed a couple times.
