Based on an original story by Yojiro Ishizaka, this well-made drama is set in a Christian school in a beautiful northern harbor town. Teacher Masaki (Obinata) speaks up for Keiko, one of the girls at the school, every time she causes problems because he feels sorry for her, a child born out of wedlock. Sumi, one of Masaki's colleagues and who is secretly in love with him, strongly disagrees with him about Keiko.

I'll be the first to admit that some of the more philosophical films done in that very subtle Japanese ways struggle to penetrate my brain. Perhaps it demands too much brain work on my already confused mind to really grasp the full complexity of what's at offer. I can still recognize the often sweet and playful acting, and there are quite a few of those to enjoy. But as an idea, I feel they could have done more spectacular things with it. But that's so often the Japanese way.

A decent little drama that never gets too heavy even with the weighty material.
