The sequence where Gene Wilder gives explicit instructions not to let him out of the room and his immediate pleas for release give perfect setup to what I feel is the defining moment of the film in which Wilder says, "Hello, handsome!" and Peter Boyle delivers the greatest non-verbal, "Who, me?" Oh, and the sexual innuendos are cute. All 627 of them.

Honestly, do you think that I would be the type of person, that would walk around the house and sing like Frankenstein's monster anytime I just so happen to be putting something on a particular brand of crackers. All because of some Mel Brooks movie that I saw as a child? You too? Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.

It feels wrong to critickize a beloved actor shortly after their passing, but on this watch I couldn't help being put off by Wilder raising his voice and mugging the camera after every gag. And the sex jokes dip to a level that Austin Powers would have left on the cutting room floor. But the studs still outweigh the duds - I love that Igor could be taken as either straightforward or deceptive and the introduction of Inspector Kemp is instant rewind-worthy.

Dynamite, certainly one of Brooks' best. Lots of laugh-out-loud lines, great comedic performances by the entire cast, and a clever recontextualization of the Frankenstein legend. And great cinematography that does justice to old horror classics.

My personal favorite Brooks film, simply because it respects the audience a little bit more than usual and doesn't smash them in the face with wackiness. Sure it's wacky, but it's balanced with with the right amount of subtlety. If only he'd used this approach more often.

My taste in comedy is probably quite peculiar, and thus I didn't love this film. It definitely has its moments, but I found the hilarious bits too few and far between for my liking. Maybe the works of Mel Brooks are just something I won't get into, but I thought The Producers was slightly funnier than this (although I don't count that film as one of my favorite comedies either).

It's pretty allright. A shame some of the jokes are so obvious, and what could've been subtle gets spelled out to the audience. Still, the whole thing has a decent sense of style and the character of Igor is absolutely wonderful. Also, wooden arm slapstick is the best.

A retelling of the Frankenstein story without the tragedy of the human condition, the issues of man and his creations and the glory of life? No thanks! I'll take Shelley's wisdom over a few sparse laughs any day! (they were funny of course, but it didnt make up for the rest)

Perhaps a large bulk of humour in this film, as a parody after all, depends on how well you can relate it to the original film. As I could not, however, I found most of the jokes unwitty, poorly executed and somewhat repetitive. There were a few rare decent laughs, but on a general level it was miserably disappointing.

Brooks and Wilder satirize monster movies the way satire should be done -- not by stuffing in as many jabs and references as they can, but by picking one movie, one story, and focussing on doing it right. As funny as the film is, it's suprisingly faithful to Shelley's novel (or as faithful as a comedy could be). Feldman's Igor is hilarious, and Wilder has many an inspired moment as the Doctor. I'll never be able to hear "Puttin' on the Ritz" without laughing ever again. Mars' robot arm kills me.

Mel Brooks doesn't get enough credit for his knowledge of quality historical cinema; whether westerns, Hitchcock, or here in the Frankenstein franchise. In this picture he wonderfully creates a faux retro film that captures the cinematography, editing, and music of classic Universal monster movies. But it also has the usual juvenile jokes--especially about sex. A few points are lost due to the script logic and a humor towards women that's cringeworthy for modern audiences. Still, recommended.

Every minute will absolutely pound you on the ground into submission, and when it does drag it bumps back at you with more side-splitting laughs. Gene Wilder is surreal, fantastic if you ask me. He deserves more praise from people. Another exciting collaboration from Brooks and Wilder, and one of the all-time best spoofs ever made. "The funniest comedy of all time." It's not even in the top 1000 funniest comedies of all time -- it amounted to five seconds of barely audible chuckles from me. In fact, the humour is often aggravating, I can't imagine the immature performances (made up mostly of making goofy faces and teenage horniness) from Feldman and Boyle amusing anyone over the age of 15. Wilder does a good job, but the material here is asinine. For a better Frankenstein comedy, instead watch Frankenhooker.

Brooks' affectionate parody of Whale's Frankenstein movies exists in stark contrast to modern film parodies which seem to regard their source material with complete contempt. He comes from a position of respect while playing up the inherent absurdity of the classic films for laughs. The visuals perfectly replicate the look of the Universal originals, and the jokes are expertly delivered by a talented cast. It runs out of steam towards the end but remains consistently amusing. Classic Brooks.

The comedic bits are delivered excellently by all of the cast members -- when they're provided to them. After watching Blazing Saddles just before, the comedy was just too sparsely placed here for my expectations. It has a charm and a clear affection for the source material it parodies, but I found myself too familiar with the Frankenstein tale and too detached to the horror genre in general to be as captivated by the movie's story as others were.

Everything works marvelously, from the old-fashioned look of the film to the game performances of the actors. Even the hokiest jokes comes across as fresh and vibrant. Brooks has a unquenchable love of gags, but there's also a respect for the the rigors of storytelling. He finds a way to fit the humor in to the framework rather than lazily bending the storyline to suit the need for a laugh. It's a discipline that sets the film apart a multitude of other comedies.

Comedy almost never holds the test of time. At almost 50 years old, Young Frankenstein is no exception. It's not that I don't recognize the comedy or appreciate the ingenuity. I do. The film is very well executed by Brooks and Wilder. However, the humor simply doesn't tickle me all that much, at least not as much as that of its successors like Larry David or even Conan. It's more entertaining as a drama, sprinkled with comedy, than vice versa. People who say this a great film are bandwagoners.

Oh no! It's perfectly good with nothing easy for me to pick on. All I can give this one is that it was a movie almost completely focused on laughs, and I've laughed harder. Wilder is phenomenal, and Boyle almost steals the show. It's a waste he practically disappears from the last third of the movie. The attention paid to replicating the lighting of classic B&W horror films is classy, and script aside this nails the source era so well that it sells the parody. Just not all gags are impressive.
