While in mourning for her mother, Allie Smith, a shy New York children's librarian, resists joining her rowdy friend Daisy and Daisy's boyfriend Pete on a double date but finally agrees to have dinner with them. At a "chop suey joint," Daisy introduces Allie to Charlie Riggs, a handsome but irresponsible braggart. When Allie refuses to go out alone with him, Charlie becomes morose and, in a drunken state, spends the night with Maizie, a taxi dancer.

Story wise Young Bride is a typical modern melodrama, but the performances help give it a lot of life! For one Eric Linden put on a great performance in his second movie as the no-good high talker. Watching and listening to him, he was almost a carbon copy of James Cagney. The other was Helen Twelvetrees as the innocent girl taken in by his bullshit. Add to that a effective supporting cast on both sides and you have a precode film which deserves a much better reputation.
