You Cannot Kill David Arquette

Personally, I have never tried to kill Mr. Arquette, but this film's title seems more like a challenge than a declaration.

More than a mere redemption tale, YCKDA startled me in its raw portrait of mental illness, and the many ways in which we -- myself included -- are too eager to jump to conclusions when judging someone on the outside. I've spent my life making fun of D.A., never knowing how badly it destroyed his self-esteem, and for that I feel terrible. Who knew a documentary on David Arquette returning to wrestling could teach such a lesson on showing empathy for your fellow human?

Here's a swerve: Arquette is a pretty decent wrestler. This "documentary" is a work, bro, but that never stopped me from eating up a pro wrestling storyline--even a familiar one--built with care and intention. Over-the-top, funny, gross, and sends you home happy, the way a good wrestling show should.

Sympathetic and endearing, and sort of intriguingly inconclusive as a redemption story. But kayfabe is dead, the lines of reality are blurred, and this documentary is at least partially a work. It's the most elaborate wrestling promo of all time. Does that matter? After all, even Werner Herzog's documentaries are manufactured for maximum dramatic effect.

Welcome to the bizarro world of David Arquette! His current life choices is so leftfield that I can't help being fascinated by it. As a wrestling fan, I've seen some of his matches, and while not very good, his presence ignites the freakshow feeling that's often so important in wrestling. A sideshow on a sideshow.

Actually a great redemption story. At first, I wanted to see David Arquette get humiliated; but then, he went through the wrestling underworld and still kept going. The soundtrack is well done, it kicks in when necessary.

I hated this documentary before I even started watching it… which is why I was very surprised when I actually watched and enjoyed it. The whole documentary is a worked shoot, wrestling is at its best when you blur the lines between art and reality. Once you realize it's all a work though, you also realize it's a very self-indulgent documentary, almost masturbatory. But it's a cool story so it's alright.

Made me believe wrestling is unscripted again; that much pain. I never knew David Arquette was into wrestling up until these last few days (I live outside US, yet also enjoy wrestling). In my opinion David Arquette is the best seller in the wrestling industry. Tough, raw, heart breaking documentary. Felt for his family. A Johnny Cage of our world. A mix of "The Wrestler", Andy Kaufman, Sacha Baron Cohen, "Passion of the Christ" in redemption through pain and bloodbath. You did great, champ.
