You Are Not My Mother

Well crafted suspense, the ending is a bit lackluster though

“You Are Not My Mother” is a solid feature directorial debut by Kate Dolan that lands on the list of people to watch. Despite some elements missing, the film still provides an enjoyable, bonkers, and scary viewing experience.

Nothing great or original, but it's well acted. A good, creepy tone is the highlight.

$Standard complaint about "elevated horror" somehow having less depth than old 80s slashers since it only has ONE metaphor that it runs into the ground. YANMM is very well-acted and all, but it still feels like a social realist tale of bullying and mental illness welded somewhat awkwardly to a half-assed supernatural twist with little to no mythology behind it.

Would have worked better as a straight drama, without the supernatural elements. The setting is so familiar it's almost comforting despite the horror and I feel a closeness to the Char. The film really brings the Halloween feels, not that the it is scary, but rather that it makes me believe that I could look outside now and it'd be autumn that i'd see.

It's doing something similar to the Babadook in a lot of ways but I've always got time for a low budget indie horror/drama about depression and parenting. It's a very specific niche.

More crap supernatural horror with crap subtext.
