Cut off by the Japanese advance into Burma, Captain Langford (Stanley Baker)and his exhausted British troops take over an enemy-held jungle village. Despite the protests of an elderly padre (Guy Rolfe) and of war correspondent Max Anderson (Leo McKern), Langford orders Sergeant McKenzie (Gordon Jackson) to shoot two innocent villagers, thereby "persuading" a Japanese informer to surrender vital information. This actually has a British officer commit a war crime! The real twist comes when a Japanese officer uses the same threat by threatening to shot his men if the captain doesn't confess. In doing so the movie smartly makes us (re)question if the means justifies the means. Besides raising this this important issue about what's fair in war, it also is entertaining movie, especially the action scenes are solid.
