Yesterday estreava há 20 anos no Festival de Veneza e na África do Sul. Não é um filme ruim, esperava que ele fosse um poço de manipulação como estamos acostumados com o cinema hollywoodiano e como esse foi indicado ao Oscar de filme estrangeiro achei que seguiria a cartilha deles... me incomoda mais ser um diretor branco explorando o sofrimento negro da África pós apartheid. Contained, low-impact drama keeps its cards a little too close to its chest in an attempt to leave room to contemplate the “cruel and unusual” social problems Yesterday attempts to navigate – it’s ultimately a two edged sword, providing food for thought that isn’t spoon-fed, but it does mean the drama sometimes feels a little distant and remote. Khumalo’s tremendously subtle performance helps, providing a masterful portrait of empathy and stoicism, with the rest of the cast equally fine.
