Very good western with two significant failings. One is an ending that is rather unconvincing. The other is a strong female character that is entirely subverted by the constant implication that all she needs is a strong man to dominate her. Other than that it's rather well done with some really good performances.

Really beautiful for a western - the indoor sets and outdoor shots are just amazingly seamless.

Gorgeous cinematography. Can't believe this is the same director who did Blood Alley. Pretty much everything that one sucked at this movie is brilliant (or at least great) at. The ending is oddly out-of-tone, though. Production Code issues perhaps?

apart from the ridiculous ending to clearly satisfy the censors and the disturbing independent woman really just needs a strong man vibe that drifts underneath the movie this was a good Western.

Bill Wellman western that has much more than action to offer. The only thing I'd change would be to remove the last couple minutes. It's needs a better ending.

A sparse black and white treatise on the way in which men think with their dicks.

Very good. Ending not entirely convincing but still, highly recommended. I love that Richard Widmark.

Apparently nothing works better as a conversation starter than a good old rape.

A nice, gritty, authentic western. Peck is always worth seeing on screen, no matter who he's playing. Having Widmark and Morgan alongside doesn't hurt a bit either.

A lot of it is just waiting it out, but I loved the ghost town atmosphere of the desert and wouldn't have minded waited a while longer. On top of that, the characters where excellent! Troubled and complicated, but still human. Anne Baxter as a tough gun babe, might me one of my favorite western characters! And Gregory Peck was a good match butting heads with her!

Very solid western, with a good story and characters, and excellent cinematography. It was fun seeing Peck as the anti-hero, and Widmark is good and creepy. As others have noted, though, the ending is way too tidy and the romance has issues (the strong woman really needing a man to force himself on her). These keep the film from top-tier status, but in all, with films such as The Ox-Bow Incident, Wings, and Public Enemy, my William Wellman appreciation is growing.
