I am fine with the politics, the patriotic fervor, and all the melodrama, but what I want to know is why were Sister Ye's husband and child afraid of her, what was up with the implied affair with the college student? Those are the questions I wanted answered. Having the narration do all the heavy lifting of the story kept taking me out of the movie.

A Chinese silent with some of it's biggest stars featured in Lingyu Ruan and to a lesser extent Li-li Li. Ruan was really the main good thing in this rather political film about industrial China and the toy makers of it's small villages feeling they have to be better then the mass-produced foreign toys. And then war breaks out and the hope in Lingyu Ruan fade away and she goes insane and gets applauded for it. A very patriotic and visually poetic.
