Man I really wanted to love this movie, but it was just so disjointed and poorly edited. A series of vignettes with no narrative arc. Some interesting threads pulled, but not pursued. Wasted potential for a very interesting man.

In a world of cynics and skeptics, a film like this is subversive yet necessary. In telling the story of Fred Rogers, Won't You Be My Neighbor ably makes the case for his worldview of an inherent human dignity and value. It dives deep into his personal struggles and motives to paint an inspirational picture of an unrelentingly optimistic man, the likes of which we are unlikely to see ever again.

Loosely compiled and lacking depth. It doesn't follow much of a time line, nor stays on one topic (sometimes diving into Mr. Rogers private life, sometimes the show, but not getting into any depth on either). Rather disappointing and I look forward to something like a mini-series that can dedicate the time that's needed to handle the material properly

The most wholesome film I have seen in ages. I only teared up 6 or 7 times! The world would be a better place if more people aspired to be like Mr. Rogers.

Of all the people that turn up in this documentary, the most surprising name excluded from the cast listing here would have to be Fred Rogers.

This man was more than wholesome. On the IMDBreen's Parent's Guide page it mentions how Mr Rogers speaks in a stern and raised voice at one point in the "Frightening and Intense scenes" and I can't help but imagine a sheltered private school manchild in middle america losing sleep and have a crying fit over that, because Mr Rogers raising his voice is the worst thing that could happen to them

Having never seen the show, this movie didn't hit me on a nostalgia level, but I was still very moved by some of the excerpts and other clips that were shown. As a documentary the film is pretty straightforward, but everybody could probably learn something from watching this.

WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR brings Fred Rogers to life as a philosophy, an important historical figure, and, occasionally, as a human being. It's the last of those glimpses that proves most fascinating. Rogers could be very, very particular and persuasive in achieving his goals, and subscribed to a sometimes rigid definition of what plagued the modern world. Luckily for us, his instinct was to meet these challenges with compassion, curiosity, and understanding.

So
yeah, I broke down crying at multiple points in this. Anyone who thinks that what Fred did wasn't magical they're insane, and this really drives home how much we miss having someone like him to inspire our children.

Crazy to think that I've lived 24 years of my life without knowing that this person who I would dare call my hero after seeing this movie walked around on the other side of the ocean and inspired millions. What an amazing character does this movie sketch. I'm unsure how much of my love is for this movie and how much of it is simply for Mr. Rogers himself, but that might be beside the point. This is an exceptionally inspiring watch.

The hype is right, this really might be the most wholesome movie ever made, and it certainly didn't stop me from tearing up almost continuously throughout the film. Although Rogers was by no means perfect, and through a 2019 lens is still quite conservative on many issues, his gospel of love, patience, understanding and healthy masculinity, was almost radical in its softness and provides a much-needed ray of optimism during a period of history when optimism seems so hard to come by.

A moving tribute to a very unique and honestly even Christ-like man who spent his life trying to encourage others to be kind. What makes this a stand out is that there are also a couple of genuine surprises even for childhood fans of his. Some critics condemn him for helping to create the "everyone is special" mentality that Millenials now swear by but that's a little unfair since he was primarily addressing mostly very young children & not actually handing out awards just for showing up.

What a beautiful little doc, one that is very singular in its quest and vision. No, there isn't some secret life of Mr. Rogers, nor does the film spend much time on negativity: it touches on it but like Rogers himself, it spends its time dealing with it and combating it on an intelligent and sympathetic way. I've forgotten a lot of what the show did so it was nice to see how it tackled all these issues. But you come to this doc to feel good, and in that sense it is just like his show/life.

I need a movie about kindness at this time when kindness in the media seems scarce, perhaps more than I needed common ground with my guy friends in the mid-1970s. I can’t pretend I’m over anything yet, but I can be reminded that kindness is a mission, that kindness is the high road, and that one of my childhood heroes looked a cynical congressman right in the eye, returned spite with kindness, and saved PBS. For about as long as I can remember, I’ve admired rebels. See this movie and know

The American critics rave about this one. As a film, it's rather hard to understand why. That said, it is interesting as a capsule in time and space: The TV show that is occurring in the 1970s-1990s seems to be from the 1940s and the host - the star of this film - is sort of creepy, but a bearer of "progressive" ideas.

In terms of content this was one of the best most uplifting documentaries I've seen in a long time. The film isn't about the show or the story of Fred Rogers' life it's a film about Mr. Rogers' core philosophy and how it touched so many lives. I never watched the show religiously growing up but it is one of the shows that really suck with me. Watching this really brought back memories and feeling of my childhood It also had me reflecting and doing a bit of introspecting. It's not a perfect ...

For those familiar with Fred Rogers, it was a gentle reminder of his character and his accomplishments. But I wouldn't call it a particularly illuminating documentary -- I was struck by the pragmatic approach that Rogers had taken with François Clemmons' homosexuality, but this topic was given minimal attention in the film.

Wanted to watch something wholesome and this was it, but I feel thoroughly teased by all the little interesting, more complicated bits of his personality that were just left hanging, like some rough edges were sanded down to preserve a sort of saintly portrait. Still, nice to spend some time with a person who believed that all humans should be afforded dignity and love and care and help (and he was a Republican?!) (and he was blamed for the liberal snowflakes thing?!)

Yet another documentary attempting to manufacture a sense of wonder by drowning it's standard structure in relentless Philip Glass derivative music. Rogers' (not well known outside the US) story is interesting - obsessively dealing with his own issues, he had a long career broadcasting children's content that filled the void of ineffective family communication. Was every kid watching ready to hear it at the same time though? I've not had the assassination talk yet with mine!

In little clips from the show blended with some original animation sequences and biting interviews, the film uncovers a range of psychic wounds hiding in plain sight in the chipper character of Mr. Rogers: anxiety, perfectionism, loneliness, and a longing to do right by others and one's own past self. Mesmerizing documentary.

A relatively rote documentary about an incredibly inspiring man. Even having not grown up with his programs, I was touched by his singular character and the simple beauty of his respect for children, and just about all people in general, as presented in the film. My only qualm with the documentary, in fact, is how clumsily it presented its beat on Mr. Rogers' treatment of François Clemmons when the latter's homosexuality was forced into the public eye.

There are so many offhand lines and stories which show Rogers as a more complicated individual only to be swept away for the sake of the film's feelgood narrative. Mr. Rogers is cast as an exceptional individual surrounded by the regressiveness of his mean-spirited parodies, cynical critics, and violent cartoons. It's easy-to-swallow, likely because it's already been pre-chewed. All the film ends up offering is weak-kneed liberal platitudes about reaching across the aisle.

This movie illustrates in clear terms the deep thirst for compassion in society, and it certainly does feel like a critical message for this era of American discord. It allows us a glimpse at the cracks in the Mr. Rogers persona and returns him to humanity, reminding us that there was nothing supernaturally good about him. Ultimately, the movie has a simple message that it tells simply, just as Mr. Rogers did, but it comes off as profound because we forget how to act with empathy at all times.

Fred Rogers is one of the few primates in the world who we can almost all agree on, and that's pretty cool. You can't really fuck up a documentary about someone who's universally adored. This is a very cohesive documentary and captures the essence and ideologies of Fred Rogers very well. It's a bit slow and repetitive, but overall it's an easy watch.

Enjoyable documentary would probably find a better 'home' as a hour long TV piece than as a theatrical feature; as presented, Rogers' story is a little too simple and straightforward to supply a satisfying film narrative; it would probably help to have a nostalgic connection to the character (?) as well, however the scenes demonstrating his ability to discuss tragic world events (RFK) in simple and direct terms to children was fascinating. A noble effort, but a little insubstantial.

A subject radical in his stillness, and a film that examines its subject in kind. This exploration of the triumph of goodness, modesty, and simplicity rubs off on you - one leaves the theater and wants to actively be a better person. He's not without his faults, of course, but if there's a better walking embodiment of 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 (to speak his language) in American pop culture, I can't think of it.
