Kendrick's assured directorial debut does have its moments but, although McDonald's thematic preoccupations (along with the premise) are what make it stand out, I found it a bit underwhelming as a whole so I guess I'd have probably preferred a more regular serial killer crime thriller instead.

Solid directing from Kendrick, and good performances all around. There's some pacing issues, and it doesn't always build tension as well as it should. It does hit sometimes, like in the parking lot scene, where she so expertly captured the fear of a woman put in that situation. If the rest of the movie was that good this would be scored a lot higher, but this is a solid 70, which on my scale is "good." Nothing wrong with good.

An interesting story, with a profound message about how the media's representation of gender dynamics can be dangerous. I just wished it had managed to find any semblance of cohesion in which to effectively convey the observations.

It's pretty fine for a directorial debut, but the writing isn't great, and the non-linear storytelling tires quickly.

Awkwardly put together. The real series of events doesn't necessarily lend itself to a conventional narrative and I think it made sense to have this be more of an observational piece, but the structure still feels somewhat arbitrary and there are significant tonal problems, especially an extended Dating Game sequence where Kendrick's character takes over the show in a really arch and comedic way that's just totally at odds with the intensity of the rest of the film. Still, largely effective.

A game show where the prize is 90 minutes of regret.

Kendrick does a decent job in her directorial debut, and her performance is really solid. But it’s a very disjointed film. Telling a true story does limit things a bit, but the fact that it doesn’t pick any particular character or storyline to focus on kills the pacing and makes it hard to stay invested. There are some truly great individual scenes, but the majority of it feels pointless by the end. Still worth watching, but the odd structure hurts it.

Kendrick's bold directorial debut does not shy away from showcasing the true discomfort in this story. Using jump cuts and creative ways to tell the story we see the ways in which men like Alcotta begin to make women uncomfortable. Very detail oriented in that regard as a movie it is very run of the mill in how it is delivered.

While it's the script that carries it, it's also very competently directed. Kendrick goes on the -to watch- list.

Interesting movie - the dating show segment was fun.

Tonally confused storytelling here to the point that i can not in good faith call this movie unfascinating. I'm hypothesizing the socio-cultural pressure / brainwashing to make a woman the protagonist "of the hour" is the cause for this narrative fumble. What's thus presented is an alienating alternation between disturbing rapekillings and a cheeky farce around a spritzy actress trying to make it in Hollywood by entering a dating show. A creepy footnote on wikipedia as a movie, it exists now

An interesting true story, poorly told and used as a self promotion tool
