Excellent from beginning to end. The play-like dialogues are flawlessly acted, and they stay captivating because of the brilliant writing which intertwines the complex study of an interesting character with relevant observasions on human psychology, ethical conundrums and class differences.

Very fine, well-written movie, with characters of unusual complexity, in this case inspired by Chekhov but for me also somewhat reminiscent of Dostoyevsky. The sister's disappearance halfway through seems a thread left rather oddly hanging, but then why not go against audience expectation by letting her play her part then exit the stage? Perhaps there is something a little too cute about the ending, too, but this is not to deny that the concluding scenes are also both ambiguous and affecting.

Winter Sleep is the type of journey that's difficult to start, that you want to turn back early on, but after you reach the halfway point, you realize just how much you're enjoying it. It's a tough film to get into and an even tougher one to watch, but once it clicks with you, it's impossible to step away from. Its topics of conversation are so interesting, and its acting is so good. This is a heck of a film.

A literary masterwork, combining reams of engrossing dialogue worthy of a great novel with the emotional impact of a sweeping, three-hour epic. While I wasn't drawn to its visual austerity, I was decidedly won over by its striking honesty.

People call it "novelistic" and "literary" betraying the fact they haven't read a literary novel. It's not bad, but the dialogue is quantity over quality (could be a translation issue, admittedly) and it just gets pretty mind-numbing after a while, a problem "Once Upon a Time" did not have. Has the smell of a filmmaker starting to believe in his own hype.

I will look ignorant and shallow, i know, and i had some problems with the subtitles (i didn't find them in my first language), but why should i care or find interesting those characters? except landscape itself, when is this film visually fascinating? it seemed to me a boring stage theater adaptation, with high litterature references and aspirations.

There's lots of moody power in Ceylan's cold craft, several interesting philosophical ideas are touched upon and, despite its length, "Kis Uykusu" is hardly worth a snore. But to what end do these characters collide and are their words any convincing as uttered by real people? In other words, unlike some great dialogic films -like "Bir Zamanlar Anadolu'da", for that matter-, this one feels less vital, more theoretical than it should.

Awesome film from Turkey, the carefully slow pace gives you that sweet feeling of drainage you get from Bela Tarr's films, the dialogue flows so naturally and the pictures from Cappadocia are mesmerizing. A masterpiece and the best film of 2014 imho.

This is a really stunning film. It's slow and over 3 hours, but it never drags for even a second. Conversations unfold gradually and their true nature is revealed almost imperceptibly. Like some of Bergman's finest work, the confrontations are complex and very revealing without feeling like they've revealed everything there is to know about these characters.

While Once Upon A Time in Anatolia was an enormous beast only Ceylan would and could tackle, Winter Sleep could have been directed by a number of other good directors from Turkey. Almost none of the hypocrite, talkative, sneaky characters are types that we would associate, not even sympathise ourselves with. The only possible feeling is disdain if not antipathy. Thus, Ceylan illustrates a world where everyone is awake but is in deep winter sleep.

I found myself - a lot, scarily, too often - in the characters and in the dialogue of this film. Other people may not relate as much, but I have a feeling there is something for everyone in this film. Saw this after Ahlat Agaci. Liked both but preferred this by a lot. Looking forward to Once Upon a Time....

A challenging film, not only for its gargantuan length and measured pace, but for its rigorous intensity, its text-heavy confrontational demeanor, and the sheer weight of its disintegrating relationships (or, perhaps, they were never whole in the first place). There's also something to be said about the gap between affluence and poverty, and the merits of altruism, but the film is complex and ambiguous enough not to moralize these points into a statement.

I was really disappointed with the lack of snow in the film. I was expecting the cast to be snowed in, with nothing to do but face their problems with each other. I will say that this movie has excellent dialogue and really good acting... but is that the ultimate recipe for a movie? It should be, but this movie just really wasn't entertaining. First of all, it is three hours and fifteen minutes long. That's a lot of reading to do, unless you speak Turkish in this Foreign film...

I sort of feel like at this point Ceylan is just checking off a list of Canonized Arthouse Greats one film at a time (Distant was Tarkovsky, Climates was Antonioni, and this one is thoroughly Bergman to a fault). His almost laughably respectable and unimaginative top ten list for BFI's 2012 poll practically confirms just how badly he wants to be ranked next to these guys, to the detriment of his own talent. I can't even remember what i though was so good about Three Monkeys.

Can't say I didn't know what I'm getting myself into, it's the third movie by Nuri Bilge Ceylan I watched. Winter Sleep is a behemoth of a movie - huge, slow and a fitting companion for Zvyagintsev's Leviathan. (notice my knowledge of The Book of Job, me smart). Like previous films of Ceylan, it is a very demanding film (it makes Leviathan look like a Hollywood blockbuster), and while I found the protagonist fascinating on the whole it's not something I'd watch again.

Phenomenally well made with beautiful photography, great acting, and even better dialogue. However, it does ramble on through it's 3.5 hour run time, becoming a reflection on semi-connected character faults as opposed to an actual narrative. Still, it is thought provoking and beautiful to watch.

Ceylan's pinpoint precise compositions of the stunning winter landscapes are breathtaking to behold and are the perfect backdrop for the icy atmosphere that's slowly revealed between the main players in this broody and insightful character study. Haluk Bilginer gives a great performance and he's ably supported by Melisa Sozen and Demet Akbag who play his resentful wife and bitter sister respectively. Film of the year.

An incredibly deep character study, this movie has long conversations (and mostly just conversations). It takes time and patience to unwrap, so it's not for everyone. The way it rewards you is by peeling back all these layers of these people and presenting sides to them that feel very real, be those sides either positive or negative. In the end, a moment of introspection. But even if we know better, do we change? Also, Cappadocia looks amazing.

Languid, seductive epic whose slow and careful pacing gives ample room for this apparently bland cast of characters to reveal their depths and neuroses - like THE SHINING without the axe, (and with an equally forbidding, impressive hotel setting) it's morbidly fascinating to see Bilginer and Sözen's relationship implode on itself, amongst Bilginer's supposed intellectual and "enlightened" outlook. Great stuff and petition for a Mike Leigh remake with Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones!

(Viewed in 2015): Winter Sleep is undoubtedly an accomplished work, yet one gets the impression that Ceylan is perhaps relying too strongly on his literary rather than cinematic influences, creating a talky psychological chamber drama ala Bergman with complex characters that nonetheless feels a tad conservative. He isn't as gifted at shooting interiors either, which doesn't help, but Aydin is a typical Ceylan male (stubborn and lacking self awareness) and he is brilliantly portrayed by Bilginer.

Filled with long stretches of dialogue that reveal slowly and in real-time the sort of characters we're witnessing on screen, this is beautifully filmed and features some unique landscapes and imagery -- yet after all this astonishment, I still think Celyan just wants to write a very thick book, but at least with his film here, the dialogue from these characters (as well as their acting) manages to come off the screen and enter the audience moreso than in his last two film.

Though Winter Sleep is a bit of a let down compared to Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, it's still a solid film for its entire 3 and a half hour running time, which is a difficult feat for any movie. The film's two leads give life to a number of nuanced complexities of character, and scenes of emotional tension are allowed to play out in Bergmanesque fashion, lingering on contradictions, humiliations, and humanity, resolving only when every last drop of emotion is spent.

Nuri Ceylan is great at immersing you in the existential struggles of really complex characters. You feel trapped inside by the forbidding cold, suffocating alongside everyone Aydin touches. Everything the protagonist does seems to be tainted by an unshakable illusion of superiority and self-righteousness, from thinly veiled acts of self-aggrandisement to forcing his will on the people he loves. Seeing this play out and eventually unravel is completely draining.

Winter Sleep is Ceylan's most Chekhovian film yet, which is saying a lot of a man who is cinema's closest thing to Chekov. It's a character study of a conceited, domineering and miserly proprietor, portrayed largely through the scoffing diatribes of his sister and much younger wife, to which he retorts punily (this also reminded me of late Ingmar Bergman movies). The acting and cinematography are on par with the excellence we've come to expect from Ceylan. It's a taxing but splendid 3 hours.
