What is it with Joan Crawford and costume dramas?! They just don't work. Same with her talkie The Gorgeous Hussy (1936). Thankfully she understood that and rarely tried it. Winners of the Wilderness (1927) is a bleak dry silent drama with an even bleaker print available, where she plays up against Tim McCoy of all people! No, that didn't work very well. Not even under the versatile W.S. Van Dyke's guidance. There are some okay action scenes, but besides that little felt all that interesting.
