Would've been a lot better without the attempted rape.

Now here's something different: an alternative-history anime. I wish it was better than it is

Great anime, flawed characters. The infamous "scene" is a source of much debate over whether these flawed characters and their behavior in the aftermath of that scene ruins this movie.

Stunning visuals, interesting world. Boring/unexplored characters, aimless scenes, and a hell of a lot of padding, which is unusual given how expensive this animation must have been, bring it down.

I'm just going to ignore "that scene" completely and say that this movie wouldn't feel out of place in the Ghibli canon. The setting, storyline, and characters are wildly creative, likable, and have a lot of depth - as well as the animation itself being absolutely amazing. Definitely one that's worth seeing.

Boring movie with uninspiring characters, soundtrack was ugh, and the sequence before the ending was really bad.

It could have been one of the best anime films ever, if not for the bonehead protagonist and unfocused message. Animation is on par with Studio Ghibli movies of that era. Story of a first astronaut who rises from ground devastated by war offers endless possibilities for a strong humanist message. Like I said, it succeeds only partially. The ending is very moving, and I wish the rest of the movie would have went along same lines.

Characters are boring as hell. Hard to connect to anything that happens.

There are a few neat concepts and the worldbuilding is strong, but the film's construction is terrible and the writing's not much better. A boring mess. (DNF)

peak late 80's anime. crazy world-building and some jaw-dropping vehicle/mechanical work. this film is a man without a country. has enough military stuff to piss off the stoners, has enough religious content to piss off the space/STEM dweebs, has a random attempted rape thrown in to piss off the social justice dweebs. absolutely nauseating synth/sampler soundtrack. but I'm still here!

The basic plot is THE RIGHT STUFF, but the story quickly takes on a deeply philosophical dimension, questioning notions of human achievement and historical progress. Incredibly original and difficult to wrap your head around. My appreciation and respect for its ambition outpaced my entertainment factor.
