With no prior knowledge of the source material, I saw this movie with the promise it was a terrible Sci-fi movie based off a video game series, and it certainly delivered on that promise. Cheap looking special effects aside, this horrible script is surprisingly acted out by a gaggle of familiar faces. Unfortunately, all that is produced is a boring mess of space nonsense not worth watching.

Space battles are usually shown as aerial dogfights. This film prefers to liken them to submarine battles with torpedoes and run-silent mode. Unless of course they decide it should be more like old sailing ship combat, or aerial dogfight, you know - whatever fits the scene. The story is terrible, the acting is terrible, the Kilrathi are not as they were in the games but are weird hairless slimy cat things that are so shrouded in smoke you can hardly see how badly made the puppets are.

Calling these characters 1-dimensional feels like a compliment.

People tell me I look like Matthew Lillard. I punch them repeatedly in the face untill they pass out. I then spit on them and say "Wing Commander."

It's not just bad, but simultaneously bland and irritating. Many of the sets and special effects could have been good, and a bunch of good actors are on the periphery, but it's all absolutely wasted. And it's real obvious that the director had only done cutscenes and briefings before, with little understanding about how you tell stories visually. The only enjoyable part is the queer tension between the leads, male and female, and even then, they're thrown into absolutely dreadful straightness.

This is an entertaining flick as long as you don't try and over-analyze it. The effects are decent for the year it was made and the space action is good.

The levels on which this doesn't work are myriad. The characters are largely irritating, the visuals murky and indistinct so as to hide crude effects work, plot threads go nowhere, fine actors are wasted, and the final battle is one of the least suspenseful in the genre. Incredibly bad.

To be honest, despite this being another bad video game film, I had fun with it and would love to see it again. I'll just put this as another guilty pleasure of mine.

This movie isn't some crazy philosophical genius, but it holds up surprisingly well. The characters are nineties to the core, the romance is forced, and there's a lot of plotholes, but the effects and combat remind of of BSG. The rating's positives all come from the combat, and the ratings negatives come from the story's weak points and the sometimes barf-worthy script.

I liked the computer game. But hard as it was for me to believe, the acting was actually better in some of the in-game cutscenes. Yikes!

An essentially rote & silly picture with lots of neat space battles & pretty
exciting, as long as you dont give it a thought, and the pacing, after the
beginning is brisk enough that there isn't much time for thought.
