In a genre where even the crappiest of the crappy can flood theaters with their demon spawn sequels, "Winchester" isn't disappointing by comparison, but rather disappointing because it is made with quality, but just not enough heart to see it through. It's not unlike a $10 Bordeaux sitting on a shelf among box wines.

I was so ready for this to be good: the premise is neat, I like Weird House Layout Shenanigans and Helen Mirren is always welcome. But soon enough all the potential is squandered as it's just more of the same shit. Predictable setups, jumpscares and people being thrown around. The 'big bad ghost' is super disappointing and I'm just going to suppress the memory of this movie somewhere deep down. I guess the haunted house was inside me all along. [farts]

A misfire (...sorry). As a lover of "true" paranormal, the source material was loaded (...sorry) with potential, but it never quite knew where to focus its aim (...ok I'll stop). It can be forgiven most of its sins except two: for a house built by ghosts, there was never any menace in the environment. And for a while, it pretended to be an anti-gun vehicle - that is, right up until a ghost was killed by a gun. A prime example of Holllywood's very physical, noncommittal, and tepid, ghost logic.

Had potential-loved that red font of the opening title, the set-up was intriguing, and the setting perfectly spooky and surreal-but the execution really underwhelms: the interest surrounding the titular character dissolves almost right after we meet her, and what follows is merely a half-baked ghost story with mediocre jump scares and a commentary on grief and gun violence that's never fully realized (not helped by average turns and poor dialogue-there's a lot of people talking to themselves).

The setting was great in a Rose Red sort of way (which, as I understand, may have been inspired by the actual Winchester house). However, the movie sucks at building suspense or horror, the characters are mostly weak, The Widow Winchester is too credible, and the structure is just boo scare to boo scare.

House that jump scares built. Literally every scare is a jump scare, no atmosphere, spookiness, creepiness. Not incompetant or infuriatingly bad just boring. The premise behind the haunting is cool and its amusing that clarke keeps writing off seeing ghosts as sideeffect of drug addiction. Clarke and mirren are great their scenes together a highlight. Channels the ghosts of old hammer films for period horror, down to the dull pace.

Derivative haunted house horror film starts out well, with a familiar but intriguing set-up, and Clarke's PTSD man of letters striking some good sparks with Mirren's spookily regal lady of the manor (her first entrance even reminiscent of QEII!) Becomes repetitive and quite dull once the premise is established, but remains watchable thanks to the performances and sumptuous set/costume design.

Not sure why critics are trashing this one. It's well done and quite haunting.

Actually pleasantly surprised with this one. It wasn't particularly scary, but took the material in a different, more ponderous direction. The period and the personal drama help to develop a haunting overall atmosphere that takes the place of more traditional horror.

It's fine, a haunted house movie that can go a little farther than its counterparts because the premise is legitimately interesting. It is a little cheap when it comes to the jump scares, gets a little hammy at the end, and can be a little dull at times, but it didn't overstay its welcome and I generally had a good enough time to recommend it.

They had one good idea in the theory behind the building of the rooms, but the rest was just forgettable, like too many horror movies. Too much reliance on jumpscares. I feel like the setting was not well used: when you have a labyrinth-like place to tell a story, you show more of it than just a few staircases and closed doors, right? They could have built a better tension with that even

The main takeaway for me was that the production of the film felt really weird. Perhaps it's the overuse of CGI (I think) but it just didn't feel natural and took something away from the film. It had the makings of an alright film, but it wasn't scary, nor did it do much else to engage.

Winchester is what I think would happen if somebody made a poor version of a Conjuring Universe film. It actually has a lot of creepy attitude, which I think carries it some of the way, but not enough to greatness. It still suffers from boring scares and a lack of interesting performances (yes, even Helen Mirren kind of phones this one in).

The house itself and the mystery surrounding that could've made a great and creepy movie but instead they went in a very generic and uninteresting route. It's not terrible just disappointing.

The source material and true story behind this is great. Unfortunately, all they know how do with it is turn it into a haunted house ride full of jump scares. Disappointing.

Didn't use the house and it's potential for a great claustrophobic atmosphere. It instead goes for a lot of jump scares (that I do think work relatively well).

A middle-of-the-road thriller that doesn't completely waste its fresh-ish premise, but breaks no new ground whatsoever. I think I walked in with no expectations and therefore can't say that I'm either disappointed or impressed. It's just kind of there, and just being there is kind of fine in this case, where in some cases that could be a criticism. Jason Clarke is decent, Helen Mirren is better (though not tasked with a complex role). Suckers for this genre will probably enjoy more so than I.

Can't make up its mind if it's documentary, a psychological thriller or low rent horror schlock with the usual trite theatrics and vibrating seats (if so equipped). The mansion really exists and uses a floating foundation--which probably contributes to the spook noises, while at the same time saving it from total destruction by earthquakes. The wacky widow and quirky (at one point 7 story) house are not fiction, but her gun guilt and the psychologist are.

Winchester isn't particularly good, but it is pretty much watchable, which sets it ahead of the bottom tier of horror movies, if nothing else. It does feel like a disappointment, though; you can sense a better movie is buried in its premise, waiting to come out but bound down by the a jump startle quota. The result is a movie that's not scary enough for the non-stop scares crowd and not smart enough for the psychological horror scene. It's not awful, but it's not going to please too many
