Wilson

Comedy

Harrelson stars as Wilson, a lonely, neurotic and hilariously honest middle-aged misanthrope who reunites with his estranged wife (Laura Dern) and gets a shot at happiness when he learns he has a teenage daughter (Isabella Amara) he has never met. In his uniquely outrageous and slightly twisted way, he sets out to connect with her. (imdb)

This film does an amazing thing where 90 minutes feels like 180.

there's this saying that every misanthropist is a disillusioned idealist. there's also the saying that people are idiots. loved the first act, which set up harrelson as a guy with just my kind of cynical world appraisal. didn't love that they once again accredit that to being a lonely, miserable fuck. that the movie stays fairly superficial on most of its themes is owed to its comedic nature, but at least it doesn't overdo it with the inevitable "wonder-healing". fun, if a bit uneven watch.

I usually like Woody Harrelson's characters, but this bumbling misfit was not particularly engaging or interesting. His social skills are creepy. Much of the humor is subtle and overshadowed by the volume of tedious plot and character development. It seemed to go from bad to worse, but ended on a somewhat less than sour note.

A not-very-compelling story carted by some good performances by Harrelson and Dern. Not as laugh-out-loud as the trailers made it look

Another comedy that hits some funny notes but goes nowhere.

Woody Harrelson is very good in the lead role in this film. The supporting cast also does a good job in this movie. The script is not fancy but well done. Overall I would recommend this film.

There are some genuine moments here enabled by an undertoned Harrelson, then half of it is bland. Still it's more penetrating than most similar black comedies.

Give the talent involved, and Laura Dern and Woody Harrelson are particularly fantastic, this should have been so much more. I really wanted to like it but I just couldn't get behind the motives of the character and care about him enough for me to care about or enjoy the rest of the narrative. This would all be fine but there's not much else in the movie to get you too excited.

Genuine in most ways comedies are not nowadays, still lacks the punch.

Protagonists don't need to be relatable or likeable, but barring those 2 things they should at least be interesting/funny/somehow sympathetic. Wilson is none of those things. He's another Dan Clowes' misanthrope, but unlike the ones in Ghost World who COULD'VE conformed if they wished, Wilson's far too dysfunctional to fit in & so his rants seem like rationalizations. Dern's character (who, despite her problems, is at least self-aware & therefore sympathetic) helps, but it's too little too late.

I'm a big fan of Harrelson, who has a habit of elevating everything he's in with his charm and naturalism, but he's playing a really shitty caricature here. I haven't read the graphic novel, so maybe I'm missing something, but Wilson in this film is a really unconvincing character. The movie expects us to find his cultural cynicism (get out of here with your cell phones and social media, society!) and blunt awkwardness hilarious and charming but I didn't buy a second of it.

Painfully uninteresting and bland. Absolutely love the graphic novel but this is the wrong choice for director and lead actor. Paul Giamatti would have been better. Pair him with Todd Solondz directing, and you have a great film. The actual product - hurts.

eng; [wilson]; ein einsamer, chaotischer und verbitterter mann erfährt durch seine ehemalige frau dass er eine tochter hat und ist fortan positiv gestimmt.; (absurd, lustig, offen vorgetragene monologe);
