Wild Bill Hickok, famed lawman and gunman of the Old West, is haunted by his past and his reputation. He is loved by, but cannot love, Calamity Jane. Dogging his trail is young Jack McCall, who blames Bill for abandoning the boy's mother and destroying her life. McCall has sworn to kill Bill, and Bill's ghosts, his failing eyesight, and his fondness for opium may make McCall's task easier. (imdb)

Neither sufficiently 'mythic' or a close character study, it is unclear why Hill made it or what he was trying to say, if anything, about this particular historical figure. The quasi-impressionist approach to narrative doesn't really work, especially as the flashbacks disrupt its rhythm, and the overall production resembles a studio project demoted to television. It is a curiosity for fans of Hill and Bridges, but it merely confirms why the former was better at urban westerns.

This film starts off well but is jumps around too much. The actors try their best with the material but a good ensemble cast is mostly wasted. Overall this film is disappointing.

Good cast, fairly well put together, drags way too much in the last act. I choose to ignore the movie being mostly pure fantasy.

The way Walter Hill handled the flashback scenes made the movie disjointed. These scenes are important to the plot, not only were they were hard to watch, they were also difficult to follow. You could see the potential of Jeff Bridges as Wild Bill, but it just doesn't work.

Meh, average Western. Bridges is decent as Wild Bill - but he just mopes about drinking and feeling sorry for himself.

I liked the look and feel of it and Bridges performance but Barkin is annoying as Jane and the script is boring as all get out.

Very mediocre western. You just see Wild Bill downing drink after drink.
