Will starts off impressively, and for a moment, it seems like it could become an original, focused film. Unfortunately, it eventually drifts into a familiar WWII meal that turns out to be blander than expected. That said, the film is packed with strong scenes, with excellent art direction and acting setting the tone. This had the potential of being a victory, but i feel it was snuffed by some mainstream choices. Respectable effort for sure.

All the usual suspects are checkboxed in this thoroughly acted and neatly produced wo2 drama - but what a direction! Superb use of camera angles, mirrors and turning-away-from-the-subject, without becoming overtechnical or gimmiky - quite inspirated. And a feast of a soundtrack, getting every possible sound out of the instruments and more.

If an editor has one job, it's to bring seemingly disparate narrative and thematic elements together into one compelling whole. What we get here instead is a collection of admittedly disturbing images being somewhat hurled around almost for sensational value minus that punch-in-the-gut feeling that render great films truly memorable. Had they focused as much time on developing the characters as they had bringing its narrative aesthetically to life, I'm sure this movie could've been really good.
