Incredibly unnerving film with strong undertones that will creep under your skin. A borderline masochistic viewing experience.

The only Fassbinder that managed not to bore me to death, maybe with Katzelmacher.

The conceit is intelligent but the execution somniferous, as most of the runtime has to be so agonisingly boring in order to stress the crushing mundanity of Herr Raab’s empty, middle-class existence. He is as much a passenger in his own life as in the movie he is the subject of, so when he finally snaps into action, the relief is almost euphoric.

"Well Fassbinder would disagree with you about Kurt Raab, he put on his list..." http://illusionpodcast.blogspot.com/2015/05/episode-58-first-fassbinder-episode.html

A very good movie which can reconcile form and content cleverly; through long shots which make us witness banal conversations and dull realities of everyday life, Fassbinder lets those banalities to get inside us and at the end the audience which is consisted of people like Herr R should actually ask themselves "why don't I run amok?" which makes this movie also a strong political movie. I had a lot of "Mitleid" for such a sincere character like Herr Raab.

A revelatory feat of how the technique of a Fassbinder film becomes its premise, nearly impossible for some viewers and captivating for others, its hatred of complacence and society's expectations is so forcibly felt that the jolting finale is as rousing as it is shocking.

Ankara: Fassbinder'in mümkün oldu?unca az kesme kullanarak bizi orta s?n?f ç?k??s?zl???n?n içine adeta f?rlatt??? film, kendisinin izledi?im erken dönem i?leri aras?nda en çok sivrileni diyebilirim.

Delves into the minutia of everyday life in the most fascinating manner. I dare anyone to not empathize with its protagonist portrayed brilliantly by Kurt Raab.

Very, very amateurish. But still, one of the best Fassbinder's early efforts.

A 'horror of ordinary modern life' kind of piece.

Wonderful. Forget being able to pinpoint the answer to the title's question... you will feel it but you won't be able to put your finger on it. Perhaps you will be left tackling another question: How is it possible to become unbearably alienated when you're right at home, leading a normal day-to-day life?
