Who's That Girl?

I hooked myself back up for another nostalgia drip with this stupid 80's screwball comedy. Madonna cosplays as an ex-con Marilyn Monroe/Betty Boop hybrid opposite Griffin Dunne's uptight New York lawyer in this predictable cartoonish rom-com. Despite the thick haze of nostalgia and/or Madonna's role in my young sexual awakening, after re-watch I think a decent amount of the entertainment still holds up compared to my fond memories.

The only difference between this movie and a good movie is that this movie isn't good.

Okay, just trust me on this, you *have* to go into this movie expecting it to be an absolute cartoon. Just a total Looney Tune. You do that, and you're going to enjoy the *heck* out of this. (Okay, other than a few *very* unfortunately racist moments.) But everything other than that is so gleefully ridiculous, and Madonna makes an amazing Manic Pixie Nightmare Girl, a proto-Harley Quinn by way of My Cousin Vinny. I am *shocked* I've never heard anyone talking up this movie.

Dumb even when it was brand new. Typical Madonna.

This gets a few points for filming a scene in the neighborhood where I grew up. Madonna passing by in a convertible was heady stuff for any 12-year old boy. She definitely made an impression.
