Whoopee!

Eddie Cantor plays an insufferable hypochondriac but in the most charming way possible as he carries this whimsical musical. The film is a product of its time, like any other film. The ending was a very off-putting celebration of whiteness, but doesn't take away from the humor of the film.

Despite that establishing shot in the great outdoors, this is all about bringing the Broadway experience wholesale to the screen, to fine success. We're sitting up close to an obvious stage production playing to the back seats, but that has its charm, especially as Cantor is very good at what he does, which is not subtlety. There's some very fun comic business (plus a weaker half hour's worth they could have cut). Also, Busby Berkeley's already in characteristic form in his Hollywood debut.
