Satire. Polly Maggoo is a fashion model in Paris, 20, on the runway at the big shows where magazine editor Miss Maxwell is the reigning opinion maker. The ridiculous passes for sublime. Polly becomes the subject of a vapid TV news documentary, "Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?," and she's pursued by the filmmaker and by the prince of Borodine, a small country. (imdb)

follows the adventures of a model, a television crew, a prince and two conniving detectives in a satire of both fashion and cinema, revealing their tendencies toward voyeurism and vapidity, and presenting all this in a way that often indulges in the complete wacko. someone has mentioned 'godard without all the bullshit', and certainly this channels him at his most carefree. it might not be an entirely cohesive package, but it's filled with wild delights.

It's like Godard without all the bullshit. A freewheeling and hilarious satire of the fashion industry, and superficiality and artifice in general, but also a celebration of freedom and panache and new ideas. And such an incredible sense of style: imaginative sets and costumes, Legrand music, and eye-popping cinematography that rivals anything by Coutard or Vierny. Rapid edits, fantasy sequences, and Gilliam-esque animation. A whirlwind of wit and whimsy and fun.

A dog and pony show with an energetic spirit.

Vivacious and whimsical, full of subtle satirical humor, moments of profound thought, beautiful and inventive visual design and music. An example of sixties New Wave cinema at its wildest and perhaps at its least aloof.

A few moments of mild amusement amid tons of uninteresting blathering. For me, satire only works if I'm interested in the subject being satirized or have strong feelings about it one way or the other. Here I was mostly uninterested and slightly bored.
