Doesn't quite get where its reaching, but it has some really disturbing and complicated moments, as well as a few really really beautiful shots.

Hasn't aged too well, especially with Elaine Baker being dyed pitch-black for her role presumably because Fassbinder couldn't find a black actress (though some of the other white actors are further whitened to emphasize the contrast), and a weak script by Fassbinder standards. Offbeat and has some brilliant shots, though.

DVDRip no MakingOff.

"Though the genre-blasting Whity sees Fassbinder toying with classic western conventions and trying to subvert distinctly American forms of racism, the moral catastrophes the director exposes are nonetheless played for a world-weary pathos and unive" - Ed Gonzalez

Some of this feels like a nightmare, most of it is just barely scraping by.

I want to like Fassbinder. But like Guy Maddin, he makes films that are visually striking but desperately in need of a good writer. The cinematography is amazing, particularly the use of lighting and color. But the story is a sophomoric look at racism, complete with "ironic" black-face and white-face (and blue-face). I don't like Westerns to begin with, and I certainly don't like German melodramatic Westerns. I usually hate the term "artsy-fartsy," but in this case it applies.
