A likable holiday trifle, but I was never more than mildly entertained, and the whole thing feels too long.

Though not every song makes me want to sing along there are some great ones in here. Not a fan of the misinformation interfering with love subplot (as it has been overused throghout cinema history) but what can you do.

I'm somewhat baffled as to why this is considered a holiday classic. with the exceptions of "White Christmas" and "Snow", this movie feels about Christmassy as Die Hard. Watching Crosby and Clooney mope over each other doesn't exactly put me in a holiday mood. Neither does the gratuitous military worship, which feels very out of place for a film from this era. That said, if you really love to show stopping dance numbers, Vera Ellen was born to dance and brings some much needed life to the film.

Glad to see other lukewarm reviews for this. It was too saccharine for me, with a silly overheard phone conversation being the sole source of melodramatic conflict. With the possible exception of Vera-Ellen, the cast doesn't hold a candle to that of Singin' in the Rain -- it was particularly irritating to see Vera-Ellen paired with John Brascia, a near-anonymous dancer, instead of the main cast.

Every year, family tradition.
Watch for where Vera-Ellen trips over Danny Kaye's foot during the "Best things happen while your dancing" scene.
We also tend to yell at the end of the movie. SOMEONE could have cleared everything up if they had acted more like an adult and talked to someone.

Ok so it's cutesy and will give you a Christmas overdose - even on Christmas Eve. However, that said, it has some great Berlin songs, impressive choreography and a chance to see Danny Kaye playing a decent role (he should have had more). Worth watching but unsurprisingly owes a lot to Holiday Inn in parts. Enjoy it for what it is.

An overly long and not entertaining enough Christmas movie, a couple of the songs are decent, but they're all overused (at least twice). the Ziegfeld-esque dance sequences are nothing terrible, but nothing I'd want to pay to see either.

Pretty fun little Christmas movie. The songs are fun, the dancing is incredible. The conflict towards the end felt pretty weak, in all honesty, but it was still very wholesome and cute and wasn't so overtly Christmas.

It's a classic Christmas movie, sure, but other than a few memorable musical numbers, the movie does not feel very Christmas-y. And honestly, the Crosby / Clooney age difference is hella creepy. She was in her late 20s and he was in his early 50s? Just did not see that happening. All-in-all, it's a solid Christmas film that has a niche viewing season every year.

Some of it is appealing - even lo these many decades later - but so much of it is oft-putting: the huge age gap between the stars, the forced relationships, the sheer impossibility of any of this show actually being put on at this location. It's great to have on in the background and ignore for the most part but its a bit of a chore to actually sit through.

So, here's the thing. I went into this thinking it was a Christmas movie. Boy do I have egg on my face. It's just a musical romance. Had I known this going in, I may have rated this higher - maybe. I found the songs to be quite dull and the plot line pretty generic. Pros: Pretty hotel/inn, no CGI.

Hard to go wrong with a quarter consisting of Crosby, Kaye, Clooney and Vera-Ellen. But this film is too serious for its own good, and needs more music and dance numbers (although 'Gee, I Wish I was Back in the Army' is very good). Not to mention more scope for Kaye to be funny.

Rough, corny, and shallow as a puddle. The sole point of entry for watching this saccharine film is to immerse yourself in a kinder, gentler world of postwar fantasy. If that's what you're looking for, you'll have a grand time.

This is a fun, energetic musical with some fairly impressive choreographed dance sequences - you may find yourself humming along to some of the songs. Its a light and entertaining watch, a nice seasonal watch, although it isn't entirely Christmas themed I suppose but some songs are certainly more relevant to the holidays than others. Its an enjoyable easy watch all the same though. There's nothing to offend anyone, so I'd recommend it on that basis.

As an atheist and a hardcore progressive, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out this movie wasn't about southern pride. I just wish more people shared my affinity for making old WWII vets feel relevant again.

Rewatch. There are some great parts, like the sets, the dancing, and the singing. Then there is the typical filler unrelated scenes just to take up time and show off range. Bing Crosby looked amazing for his age. Fav scene: the men performing the sister act.

Finally watched all of it in almost one go this year. I hate the dated conflict because of a misunderstanding trope but maybe it was fun in the 1950's. I had a great Christmas so maybe my positive vibes bolstered this movie.

Come for Bing Crosby. Stay for Vera-Ellen (and her distractingly tiny corsett-inflicted waist). This is a bunch of great song and dance numbers strung together by a throwaway "it was all just a misunderstanding" rom-com plot.

The poster-romance for bad-luck, bullheaded, heaven-forbid-we-communicate misunderstandings. Utterly random dance sequences, often with Mr. No-Name (because Kaye wasn't a good enough dancer). But, I do enjoy me some Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, and I'm a sucker for Christmas and snow. Here's to "Gee I Wish I Was Back in the Army" being in my head for another year. *sigh*

While it has very little to do with Christmas in many regards, it's a relatively fun romantic comedy musical. The movie goes a little slow at times and the whole "overheard part of a conversation, but jumped to the wrong conclusion" of the movie was unnecessary. Overall though the dance numbers and songs were fun and impressive to watch and it's an enjoyable little movie, but has its flaws as well.

Yeesh. That could've stood to be half an hour shorter - maybe make it a full hour. It's got far too much setup, including an extended WWII sequence, yet somehow also drags along when it gets there, and it has to resort to the ol' "miscommunication MEANS WE ARE BREAKING UP" trope just so we have a conflict for the last half-hour. The songs are pretty dire in general, and there are several that have nothing to do with anything. And it worships the military at a Michael Bay level. Sheesh.

Surprising to see this movie reflecting apparent nostalgia for the army/wartime in 1954. Seems both too late and too early for that. One couple had no misunderstanding or obstacle to overcome, meanwhile Rosemary Clooney storms out of one or two scenes with Bing C. over a misunderstanding that shouldn't have happened and doesn't seem important.

Not a bad film, but mostly a rather dull one. The musical numbers are nearly all flat. You can usually count on Crosby to have presence and charm, but here he's bland. There were a few moments when the film showed sparks of potential, but it always just falls back down again. The whole military plot is supremely uninteresting and the romances show flashes here and there but never develop depth. There's just no energy, no flash, no sweetness either. Just a decently produced slog.

Comparisons with "Holiday Inn" are inevitable: I found this one, in fact, much less objectionable, at least in respect to plot and quality of the songs. Still, the hackneyed plot mechanisms are so worn-out you can practically hear them creak.

Great chemistry and terrific acting from the main 4 players. The military angle is very appropriate for the first decade in post WWII America - and still rings true today in an economic sense. It's sentimental without being corny. Some of the songs, (memorable as they are), and dance numbers go on a little longer than they need to, but they don't knock the film down enough to keep it from being a classic.

An overrated cheesefest. Rosemary Clooney has no chemistry with the aging Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye has even less with Vera-Ellen, the girl he's paired off with. At least she can dance well. Yeah there's that famous White Christmas song (snore). Give me Darlene Love's version any day and let's bury this Christmas turkey.
