Rewatched it last year. It was one of my favorite movies around 2004, which is bizarre to me, considering that the movie was practically brand new at the time and so I don't know how or why I would have a VHS copy of it. Gets bogged down with a bit too much melodrama at the end, but otherwise holds up as a great classic-style samurai flick.

Although there are some bad acting scattered throughout the film (though mostly from the younger cast), it doesn't take away from the story. Kiichi Nakai plays the unusual samurai Kanichiro perfectly.
