Surprisingly good. It has a mediocre script and it has it's share of contrivances, especially towards the end. I expected all that though, and was pleased at what I didn't expect, like stellar performances and splendid cinematography (Wasn't aware Nykvist was involved til the opening credits, so that helped.) The direction was solid too. All around recommendable.

At the end, it becomes a hard to digest family drama, but overall, it's fair to say this film was gripping till the last frame, mostly due to Dicaprio's spectacular performance as Arnie Grape.

This film seems to be constantly teetering on a cliff of saccharinity, but due to restraint not shown by many filmmakers in this era, it works on a real emotional level. It's strange how a few bad musical choices or montage sequences could have ruined everything.

They say that Leonardo DiCaprio auditioned to play Anakin Skywalker for Attack of the Clones. Based on Hayden Christensen's performance, he should have just sent in the tape from his audition for this. He would have gotten it hands down.

What a fabulous film... a really heart warming film about a family trapped by geography, mental illness and obesity; sad, amazingly funny in places, and some simply wonderful acting. Di Caprio is just amazing, and I always love Juliette Lewis's "hippy simplicity". People say this is a depressing film. It is everything BUT depressing. It's a film about family loyalty, respect, love and the sacrifices that have to to be made in order to prioritize them. Just a fantastic film with a great climax

Great stuff, really. Dicaprio and Depp are fantastic, as I expected. You can feel Gilbert's frustration at being tied down and the fact that the storytelling is understated works in it's favor. I never thought of the film as being over dramatic, I'd say the performances and general tone of the film are rather realistic.

Depp and Dicaprio are magnificent. Dicpario becomes Arnie Grape, the situations are true to life, the film isnt over the top. Stellar film all the way through, it is one of those actionless films you can never get enough of. The plot is amazing, the scenery was interesting, no glamour, no ritzy high class people, just actors at their most vulnerable, acting as great as they can. What a film, it will never disappoint me. The ending is tear jerking. Bring some tissues, you are bound to be crying.

I haven't seen this movie in a long time, so I'm not sure if it would have the same emotional effect on me today as it did back then, but I remember the plot being strange, sad, and sweet. It captured quiet rural isolation and boredom really well. The acting is good, and the ending was horribly depressing. Oh, and I'm not sure if I mentioned that I tend to like things that are horribly depressing.

The love interest's wardrobe was awful. Was deliberate characterization, or a misplaced effort to make her "quirky"? The badness of the fashion made the whole movie more depressing than it probably needed to be. It was THAT wretched, k? Gilbert isn't likeable, Leo's child performance is great but disturbing. Mental illness can be disturbing. It is really unsettling, on some primal, reptile-brain level that makes mother mice eat their young. But I still appreciate this because it's unique & real.

Of course, DiCaprio’s performance in this should receive special mention, as it is nothing short of brilliant, but Johnny Depp’s turn as Gilbert is pitch-perfect too, and, in fact, none of the performances are to be sniffed at. A good film which is worth multiple viewings.

liked how they showed the reality of having to care for a retarded person as being a giant pain in the ass. movies usually romanticize retarded people and make them spout "magic heartwarming simple wisdom" that makes the audience realize that maybe we could all learn a thing or two about life from them for a change. not here. also for some reason they really liked making movies set in quaint rural america during the 90's. you never did find out who was eating gilbert's grapes though.

Becky says she's not interested in conventional appearance-based romance, yet she falls in love with the personality-less handsome-as-a-plank Gilbert. Why didn't she fuck Arnie, he needs that more. Anyway, quite a good film with some surprisingly great performances from diCaprio and Darlene Cates. Covers quite a lot of bases in regards to small town living, which sometimes works for the film, but sometimes adds a lack of focus to it as well.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a wonderful treat. Depp and DiCaprio in early roles are really the highlights, but the story is sweet and the direction charming. There's not a lot of bad sides to this film, though to be honest, its writing could become a tad melodramatic and sometimes a bit boring. That being said, this is a wonderful film, that tugs at the heartstrings.

The tone veers a bit much into magic realism at times and kind of undermines the heart of what's eating Gilbert. But this is a great vision of the Plains, much of it painted in long shots, humanistic and gentle. The end might not make much logical sense, but it's a fitting cap to this family's life.

A very solid drama about a dysfunctional rural family, only particularly notable for Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as the mentally disabled Arnie in what might be his best performance ever. "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" is a great coming of age film start 3 great young talents Johnny Depp, Juliette Lewis, and Leonardo DiCaprio brilliantly playing the part of Gilbert's mentally challenged brother getting a nomination for Best Supporting Actor (for which he should have won). This film is so good it should have been nominated for all categories and win. It is warm and witty, desperate and sad. An excellent ride.

Johnny Depp (Gilbert) was good even as a teenager. I think Leonardo DiCaprio should play a retard in every movie he is in since he's so good at it. Mary Steenburgen is the cheating wife hot for Gilbert. Becky (Juliette Lewis) is his hope for love and a relationship, but his family holds him back. The story is sometimes slow, but it has a good message and was enjoyable to watch.

Predictable and sentimental but not excessively so, so it didn't bother me much. It's an admittedly well-told little tale -the visuals are strong, the characters are all affable despite their flaws and Di Caprio delivers a truly impressive performance as Arnie. The film is nothing terribly spectacular or original, but engrossing and touching it definitely is.

The sort of title that seems highly unlikely to precede a good movie. What follows in this instance does not lower the odds. As a slice of family life in small-town America, the movie is so hell-bent on being "different" as to be unrecognizable as small-town America or as family life or even as a slice. (Hallstrom ought to have felt right at home.) Within its own skewed guidelines, it delivers a couple of emotional payoffs
